وَلَيلَةٍ خَبَطتُ مِن ظُلَمائِها
بِنازِحِ الخَطوِ إِذا الخَطوُ دَنا
Many a night I pressed blindly through its darkness,
on a far-striding mount when strides grew short.
قَدِ اِنبَرى يَغتَرِفُ السَيرَ بِنا
في طُرُقٍ يَخبِطُ فيهِنَّ الهُدى
He sprang forward, scooping up the journey with us,
along paths where guidance itself groped blindly.
يَنهى الوَجى أَمثالَهُ عَنِ السَرى
وَساعَدَتهُ ميعَةٌ تَنهى الوَجى
Foot-soreness deters mounts like him from night travel,
yet youth’s first vigor aided him, keeping soreness at bay.
