I spend the night a stranger to sleep,
as study and books rob me of it.
The guardian of wisdom at my fingertips
fashions what the intellect pours forth.
The nose of my conscience—when I make it bleed—
pours out all that the heart has absorbed.
The tongue of my palm—when I give it speech—
delights you with its sweet discourse.
Emaciated in form, frail,
yet mighty in action and capable.
Though it is not like a keen sword in its edge,
in its effect it is indeed a keen sword.
A man points it downward and thereby rises;
many a lowering ends in elevation.
Since we came to know the delight of learning,
neither sweets nor refreshing drink delight us.
