أَتَدعوني وَتُطعِمُني يَسيراً
وَتَسقيني الكَثيرَ عَلى اليَسيرِ
Do you invite me, only to feed me a little,
and give me much to drink upon that little?
فَأَصبَحَ مِنكَ في يَومٍ عَسيرٍ
فَلا يَنفَكُّ في يَومٍ عَسيرِ
So, because of you, I wake to a difficult day,
and it does not let up throughout a difficult day.
هُما حَرّانِ مِن جوعٍ وَسُكرٍ
فَيالَكَ مِن سَعيرٍ في سَعيرِ
Both are burning—from hunger and drunkenness.
What a blaze you are—a blaze within a blaze!
أَقولُ وَفي غَضائِرِهِ عِظامٌ
أَتَغرِفُ مِن قُدورٍ أَم قُبورِ
I say, with my bones in his earthen bowls:
Are you ladling from cooking pots, or from graves?
