نارٌ تَلَعَّبُ بِالشُقوقِ كَأَنَّها
حُلَلٌ مُشَقَّقَةٌ عَلى حُبشانِ
A fire plays among the cracks, as though it were
torn robes upon Abyssinians.
رَدَّت عَلَيها الريحُ فَضلَ دُخانِها
فَأَتَت بِهِ سَبَجاً عَلى عِقيانِ
The wind turned the excess of its smoke back upon it,
and brought it as jet upon pure gold.
فَالجَوُّ يَضحُكُ في اِبيِضاضِ شَرائِرٍ
مِنها وَيَعبُسُ في اِسوِدادِ دُخانِ
The air laughs at the whiteness of its sparks
from the fire, and frowns at the blackness of smoke.
