كانَ لي رُكنٌ شَديدٌ
وَقَعَت فيهِ الزَلازِل
I had a mighty pillar;
and earthquakes struck it.
زَعزَعَتهُ نُوَبُ الدَهرِ
وَكَرّاتُ النَوازِل
The vicissitudes of time shook it,
as did calamities’ repeated assaults.
ما بَقاءُ الحَجَرِ الصَلدِ
عَلى وَقعِ المَعاوِل
How can solid stone endure
beneath the blows of pickaxes?
