أَكثَرَ ما تَكتُبُهُ الأَقلامُ
لَم تَسعَ في زَوالِهِ الأَيّامُ
Most of what pens inscribe,
the days have not labored to erase.
يا لَكَ مِن خُرسٍ لَها كَلامُ
مَوتى إِلَيها النَقضُ وَالإِبرامُ
What mute beings you are—yet you have speech!
Dead things—yet theirs are revocation and ratification.
قَوامُ مَجدٍ مالَهُ قَوامُ
نِظامُ مُلكٍ خانَهُ النِظامُ
The mainstay of a glory that has no mainstay,
the order of a realm whose order has betrayed it.
