قُلتُ وَالراحُ في أَكُفِّ النَدامى
كَنُجومٍ تَلوحُ في أَبراجِ
I said, as wine rested in the drinking companions’ palms,
like stars gleaming in their constellations:
أَمُداماً فَرَطتُم لِمُدامٍ
أَم زُجاجاً سَبَكتُمُ في زُجاجِ
“Have you blended wine into my wine,
or fused glass into glass?”
وَكَأَنَّ النُجومَ وَاللَيلَ داجِ
نَقشَ عاجٍ يَلوحُ في سَقفِ ساجِ
And the stars, while the night was deep-dark,
were ivory dots gleaming in a ceiling of teak.
