أَلا إِنَّما النُعمى تُجازى بِمِثلِها
إِذا كانَ مَسداها إِلى ماجِدٍ حُرِّ
Lo, a kindness is repaid in kind
when bestowed upon a noble, freeborn man;
فَأَمّا إِذا كانَت إِلى غَيرِ ماجِدٍ
فَقَد ذَهَبَت في غَيرِ أَجرٍ وَلا شُكرِ
but if it is bestowed upon one who is not noble,
then it is lost—without reward and without thanks.
إِذا المَرءُ أَلقى في السِباخِ بُذورَهُ
أَضاعَ فَلَم تَرجِع بِزَرعٍ وَلا بَذرِ
When a man casts his seeds upon salt-barren ground,
he wastes them: they yield neither crop nor seed.
