1. If I do not yearn for the land of my kin,

    then no firm place is mine among the wise.

  2. It is only reasonable that I should yearn for my first abode,

    where I lived within its shelter in comfort and ease—

  3. and for a meadow my eyes tended in the evenings,

    and a bough my right hand bent down in the morning.

  4. And I do not forget my pledges when there come

    the daughters of separation between my companions and me.

  5. If, though far away, I do not honor those pledges,

    then you are neither one to be trusted nor one who is true.
