Do you not see the death of glory and virtue,
and how the star sets among the boulders?
Why do the fates overlook every deficient man,
yet search the horizons for every man of virtue?
To glory’s humiliation, driven to death was
every man noble in deed and free in character—
though whomever it has spared is not immortal,
and no man who hopes for immortality is wise.
I have seen the fates between one going in the morning and one going in the evening;
why, then, are all creatures either unmindful or heedless?
Never have I seen a beloved as harmful as this world,
nor have I seen a truth like death treated as falsehood.
