خُبزُ الأَميرُ عَشيقُهُ
يَغدو عَلَيهِ يُلاعِبُه
The prince’s bread is his beloved;
each morning he goes to it and fondles it.
وَإِذا بَدا لِجَليسِهِ
أَفضى إِلَيهِ يُعاتِبُه
And should it appear before his table companion,
he draws close to him, reproaching him.
وَتَحوطُهُ أَحراسُهُ
وَتَذِبُّ عَنهُ كَتائِبُه
His guards encircle it,
and his battalions defend it.
فَالزَورُ يُصفَعُ عِندَهُ
وَالضَيفُ يُنتَفُ شارِبُه
So the visitor is slapped in its presence,
and the guest has his mustache plucked.
