I passed a morning songbird, as though she
at sunrise took a second draught of pepper-spiced wine.
Spotted and dusky, she has a color you would think
was clothed in a piece cut from the cloud’s skin.
She appeared, displaying to the eye a musk-tinted collar
and a kohl-dark eye, gazing like a gazelle.
She has a tail full along its sides, like what
you peel from a palm blossom, or a blade drawn bare.
When she soars through the sky, you would think her wing
echoes a whistle or sets a little bell ringing.
