1. When I am spared the tawny wine,

    from cup and from mingling,

  2. and the goblet brings no benefit,

    and mixing wine no longer cheers,

  3. when those who abandon pleasure abandon it,

    and those who postpone drinking postpone it—

  4. because of days that plunged us

  5. which waste the body away

    and set the heart ablaze,

  6. so that I never cease to burn,

    even when surrounded by ice;

  7. for no one escapes their evil,

    and from their guile there is no refuge—

  8. we took delight instead in something heard,

    beautifully composed and woven,

  9. and recited the name of the one we love

    over backgammon and chess.

  10. Through it, we seemed caught in a fray,

    though no true fray was ours.

  11. The Blacks advanced against the Romans,

    and the Romans rose against the Blacks.

  12. How lovely were those white ones

    walking toward the dark-eyed ranks!

  13. Between ourselves we waged a war

    without clamor or bloodshed.

  14. We witnessed it without a drum,

    without trumpet or cymbal,

  15. and entered it without a sword,

    without spear or spearhead.

  16. You see our horses galloping

    without bridles or saddles.

  17. The queen moves on a crooked course

    for a purpose that is straight;

  18. a rook takes up a path

    and never strays beyond that path;

  19. and an elephant no one drives

  20. Beside the king stands raised

    the banner of victory and triumph.

  21. Around me are radiant faces

    bearing the mark of the saddle.

  22. If beauty is entered in the register,
