الكَتبُ عَقلُ شَوارِدُ الكِلَمِ
وَالخَطُّ خَيطُ فَرائِدِ الحِكَمِ
Books are the tether of fugitive words;
script is the thread of wisdom’s rare pearls.
بِالخَطِّ نُظِّمَ كُلُّ مُنتَثِرٍ
مِنها وَفُصِّلَ كُلُّ مُنتَظِمِ
By script, every scattered word is ordered
from among them, and every ordered whole delineated.
وَالسَيفِ وَهوَ بِحَيثُ تَعرِفُهُ
فَرضٌ عَلَيهِ عُبادَةُ القَلَمِ
And the sword—though it is as you know it—
is obliged to revere the pen.
