عَيبُ بني مَخلَدٍ سماحُهُم
وأنَّهُم يُتلفون ما ملكوا
The fault of Banū Makhlad is their open-handedness,
and that they squander whatever they possess;
وأنَّ فيهم لمن يُلايِنُهم
لينٌ وفيهم لغيرهم حَسَكُ
and that, for whoever deals gently with them,
they have gentleness—and thorns for all others.
