إذا ما شئتَ أن تحظى

إذا ما شئتَ أن تحظى

وأن تلبسَ فوهِيّا

وأن تلبسَ فوهِيّا

If you wish to win favor,

And dress in Fūwah finery,

وأن تصبحَ ذا مالٍ

وأن تصبحَ ذا مالٍ

فكن عِلجاً نَبيطِيّا

فكن عِلجاً نَبيطِيّا

And become a man of wealth,

Then be an uncouth Nabataean.

وإن سَرَّك أن تشقى

وإن سَرَّك أن تشقى

وأن تُصبِحَ مَقلِيّا

وأن تُصبِحَ مَقلِيّا

But if it pleases you to suffer,

And to become despised,

فكن ذا نَسَبٍ ضَخمٍ

فكن ذا نَسَبٍ ضَخمٍ

وكُن مَع ذاك نحويّا

وكُن مَع ذاك نحويّا

Then be a man of mighty lineage,

And, on top of that, a grammarian.
