لعمري لئن بَيَّعتُ في دار غُربتي
ثيابيَ أن ضاقت عليَّ المآكلُ
By my life, if in the land of my exile there should be sold
my clothes, when provisions grow scarce for me,
فما أنا إلا السيف أخلَق جَفنُهُ
له حِليَةٌ من نفسهِ وهوَ عاطلُ
I am but a sword whose scabbard has worn away:
its ornament comes from itself, though it stands bare.
