يا هذه كم يكون اللوم والفَنَدُ
لا تعذلي رجلاً أثوابُهُ قِدَدُ
O you, how much blame and rebuke there is,
Do not blame a man whose clothes are rags,
إن أُمسِ منفرداً فالبحر منفردٌ
والبدرُ مُنفردٌ والسيف منفردُ
If yesterday he was alone, so is the sea alone,
And the moon alone, and the sword alone,
إن كان صَرف زمانٍ عاب هيئته
فبين طمريه منه ضيغمٌ أسدُ
If the turning of time has marred his form,
Between its ruins lies a lion's roar.
