1. هو العلم لا كالعلم شيء تراوده

    لقد فاز باغيه وأنجح قاصده

    Knowledge is paramount, nothing compares,

    Its seeker succeeds, its pursuer excels,

  2. وما فضل الإنسان إلا بعلمه

    وما امتاز إلا ثاقب الذهن واقده

    Man is distinguished only by his knowledge,

    Keen minded and judicious stand out,

  3. وقد قصرت أعمارنا وعلومنا

    يطول علينا حصرها ونكابده

    Our lives and learning seem too short,

    Recording them burdens us and we suffer,

  4. وفي كلها خير ولكن أصلها

    هو النحو فاحذر من جهول يعانده

    In all is goodness but the foundation,

    Is grammar, beware those who deny it,

  5. به يعرف القرآن والسنة التي

    هما أصل دين الله ذو أنت عابده

    Through it the Quran and Sunna are known,

    The origin of God's faith you worship,

  6. وناهيك من علم علي مشيد

    مبانيه أعزز بالذي هو شائده

    Let alone the lofty discipline built,

    On pillars it strengthens and secures,

  7. لقد حاز في الدنيا فخاراً وسؤدداً

    أبو الأسود الديلي فلا جم سائده

    In this world it brought pride and fortune,

    Abu Al-Aswad al-Du’ali, his glory is unmatched,

  8. هو استنبط العلم الذي جل قدره

    وطار به للعرب ذكر نعاوده

    He originated this supreme science,

    And the glory of Arabs flew high by it,

  9. وساد عطاء نجله وابن هرمز

    ويحيى ونصر ثم ميمون ماهده

    His son Ata’ succeeded and Ibn Harmaz,

    And Yahya, Nasr, then Maymoon the guide,

  10. وعنبسة قد كان أبرع صحبه

    فقد قلدت جيد المعالي قلائده

    Unbasa was the most eloquent of his company,

    He wore the necklace of supreme virtues,

  11. وما زال هذا العلم تنميه سادة

    جهابذة تبلى به وتعاضده

    This knowledge was developed by masters,

    Learned jurists nurtured and supported it,

  12. إلى أن أتى الدهر العقيم بواحد

    من الأزد تنميه إليه فراهده

    Until time brought one man from Azd,

    The cloud’s core - that mentor Khalil Bin Ahmad -

  13. غمام الورى ذاك الخليل بن أحمد

    أقر له بالسبق في العلم حاسده

    Conceded he led this field, despite envy,

    In Basra dawn rose for Al-Khalil,

  14. وبالبصرة الغراء قد لاح فجره

    فنارت أدانيه وضاءت أباعده

    His insights shone, his words convinced,

    With the keenest mind and truthful tongue,

  15. بأذكى الورى ذهناً وأصدق لهجة

    إذا ظن أمراً قلت ها هو شاهده

    If he opined, his witness would agree,

    Not only did he master it, but all knowledge,

  16. وما إن يُروي بل جميع علومه

    بدائه أعيت كل خبر يجالده

    Defeated every opposing argument,

    The second founder, surpassing the first,

  17. هو الواضع الثاني الذي فاق أولاً

    ولا ثالث في الناس تصمى قواصده

    None rivals the pillars of his principles,

    He was the sage of his times,

  18. وقد كان رباني أهل زمانه

    صؤومٌ قؤومٌ راكع الليل ساجده

    Devout, upright, bowing nights in worship,

    Dividing his years between retreats

  19. يقسم منه دهره في مثوبة

    وشوقاً بأن الله حق مواعده

    And passion as God promised reward,

    A year for Hajj, a year for Jihad,

  20. فعام إلى حج وعام لغزوة

    فيعرفه البيت العتيق ووافده

    The Ancient House knows him as a visitor,

    Never distracted from science and piety,

  21. ولم يثنه يوماً عن العلم والتقى

    كواعب حسن تنثني ونواهده

    By tempting beauties and flirts,

    Often dwelling in the wilderness,

  22. وأكثر سكناه بقفر بحيث لا

    تناغيه إلا عفره وأوابده

    With only deer and wild goats as company,

    His food merely barley and spring water,

  23. وما قوته إلا شعير يسيغه

    بماء قراح ليس تغشى موارده

    Streams not reaching his dwellings,

    Indifferent to worldly vanity and flowers,

  24. عزوفاً عن الدنيا وعن زهراتها

    وشوقاً إلى المولى وما هو واعده

    Yearning for the Master and His promise,

    When he saw Sibawayh’s brilliance,

  25. ولما رأى من سيبويه نجاتة

    وأيقن أن الخير أدناه باعده

    And knew he was the best to inherit his learning,

    He favored him as if he were his own son,

  26. تخيره إذ كان وارث علمه

    ولاطفه حتى كأن هو والده

    And taught him his knowledge bit by bit,

    Until his features shone and his power peaked,

  27. وعلمه شيئاً فشيئاً علومه

    إلى أن بدت سيماه واشتد ساعده

    So when God took him as promised,

    He died unique in his era,

  28. فإذ ذاك وافاه من الله وعده

    وراح وحيد العصر إذ جاء واحده

    For without him grammar would be void.

    He revealed a book which was glory incarnate,

  29. أتى سيبويه ناشراً لعلومه

    فلولاه أضحى النحو عطلاً شواهده

    As Ka’b bin Maro’s descendant takes pride,

    Gathering what scattered throughout the land,

  30. وأبدى كتاباً كان فخراً وجوده

    لقحطان إذ كعب بن عمرو محاتده

    Flowing back through him and his origins,

    Named after Omar bin Othman bin Qanbar,

  31. وجمع فيه ما تفرق في الورى

    فطارفه يعزى إليه وتالده

    Even rebels submitted to his command,

    Pair it with Qanbar’s grammar reader!

  32. بعمرو بن عثمان بن قنبر الرضا

    أطاعت عواصيه وثابت شوارده

    Its signs evident and examples clear,

    Abu Bishr’s book, accept no other,

  33. عليك قران النحو نحو ابن قنبر

    فآياته مشهودة وشواهده

    All beauty is lost if you abandon it,

    They are seas of knowledge, when waves swell,

  34. كتاب أبي بشر فلا تك قارياً

    سواه فكل ذاهب الحسن فاقده

    Pearls appear as you watch them surge,

    Never count what he achieved, for he remains matchless,

  35. هم خلج بالعلم مدت فعندما

    تناءت غدت تزهى وأنت تشاهده

    Containing all you seek inside,

    If you ever preside as judge over his book,

  36. ولا تعد عما حازه إنه الفرا

    وفي جوفه كل الذي أنت صائده

    Among us your value and glory peak,

    Do not keep pacing if you unlock its codes,

  37. إذا كنت يوماً محكماً لكتابه

    فإنك فينا نابه القدر ماجده

    Has time worn you down or misfortunes overburdened?

    It attracts swords if war cries sound,

  38. ولست تتالي إن فككت رموزه

    أعضك دهر أم عرتك شدائده

    Only a fool protests what it makes plain,

    Some old man conspired, his head swollen,

  39. هو العضب إن تلق الهياج شهرته

    وإلا تصب حرباً فإنك غامده

    Deeming grammar easy to grasp,

    Busy only with juristic trivialities,

  40. تلقاه كل بالقبول وبالرضا

    فذو الفهم من تبدو إليه مقاصده

    Jotting them in his papers as he spied,

    Gaining status and position among people,

  41. ولم يعترض فيه سوى ابن طراوة

    وكان طرياً لم تقادم معاهده

    Distracted from seeking higher merits,

    Never tasting the flavor of literature,

  42. وجسره طعن المبرد قبله

    وإن الثمالي بارد الذهن خامده

    Or excelling in prose or poetics,

    Composing beginner’s metaphors, seeking,

  43. هما ما هما صارا مدى الدهر ضحكة

    يزيف ما قالا وتبدو مفاسده

    Well matched words to contract with them,

    He saw arrogance and uncouthness in Sibawayh,

  44. تكون صحيح العقل حتى إذا ترى

    تباري أبا بشر إذا أنت فاسده

    Unfit for his elevated gatherings,

    So I said: Avoid what you cannot understand!

  45. يقول امرؤ قد خامر الكبر رأسه

    وقد ظن أن النحو سهل مقاصده

    For you are feeble minded and stagnant,

    By your life! One with a beard and turban,

  46. ولم يشتغل إلا بنزر مسائل

    من الفقه في أوراقه هو راصده

    Bowing as all directions aid him,

    Walking the low earth while his sights,

  47. وقد نال بين الناس جاهاً ورتبة

    وألهاه عن نيل المعالي ولائده

    Are fixed on highest summits,

    Claiming to be a scholar, uniquely virtuous,

  48. وما ذاق للآداب طعماً ولم يبت

    يعنى بمنظوم ونثر يجاوده

    Having shunned the nightly grammar lessons!

    You dare criticize what you are unqualified to grasp,

  49. فينكح أبكار المعاني ويبتغي

    لها الكفء من لفظ بها هو عاقده

    Mere turmoil of confused thoughts,

    Goodness is in persevering vigilantly in its lessons,

  50. رأى سيبويه فيه بعض نكادة

    وعجمة لفظ لا تحل معاقده

    For only the wakeful have visions as witnesses,

    Do not hope for rewards in this world,

  51. فقلت اتئد ما أنت أهل لفهمه

    وما أنت إلا غائض الفكر راكده

    For with God alone they fully exist,

    Few are grammarians worldly blessings,

  52. لعمرك ما ذو لحية وتسمت

    وإطراق رأس والجهات تساعده

    While the ignorant enjoy abundant luck,

    They have role models - For Ali suffered poverty,

  53. فيمشي على الأرض الهوينا كأنما

    إلى الملأ الأعلى تناهت مراصده

    Without a friend to help him,

    After him, Khalil was deprived of living,

  54. وإيهامك الجهال أنك عالمٌ

    وأنك فرد في الوجود وزاهده

    With no shortage of envious detractors,

    Abu Bishr met the foolish side of life one morning,

  55. بأجلب للنحو الذي أنت هاجرٌ

    من الدرس بالليل الذي أنت هاجده

    As misguidance reached its furthest,

    Haroon came to debate the master,

  56. أصاح تجنب من غوي مخذل

    وخذ في طريق النحو إنك راشده

    Their argument erupted unconcealed,

    So he silently bowed then uttered his answer,

  57. لك الخير فأدأب ساهراً في علومه

    فلم يسم إلا ساهر الطرف ساهده

    With truth - but the truth’s rejecter disavowed,

    Omar plotted against Ali when he ruled,

  58. ولا ترج في الدنيا ثوابا فإنما

    لدى الله حقاً أنت لا شك واجده

    And Amro he favored to spite him,

    He served the poisoned cup whose intoxication,

  59. ذوو النحو في الدنيا قليل حظوظهم

    وذو الجهل فيها وافر الحظ زائده

    Brought the fate he was destined,

    Ibn Ziyad shared complicity in his aim,

  60. لهم أسوةٌ فيها علي لقد مضى

    ولم يلق في الدنيا صديقاً يساعده

    Like Ibn Ziyad diseased hearts spread,

    Together they poisoned Ali and Qanbar,

  61. مضى بعده عنها الخليل فلم ينل

    كفافاً ولم يعدم حسوداً يناكده

    Lethal venom lethal asps spread,

    I lament for Amro - No one resembles him,

  62. ولاقى أبا بشر بشر سفيهها

    غداة تمادت في ضلال بغادده

    If analysis falls short, the critic is dumbfounded,

    His life was drained by youth’s defiance,

  63. أتى نحو هارون يناظر شيخه

    فنافحه حتى تبدت مناكده

    Without consideration for old age or friends’ support,

    His knowledge was valued by East and West,

  64. فأطرق شيئاً ثم أبدى جوابه

    بحق ولكن أنكر الحق جاحده

    Its benefits illuminating both horizons,

    Now none recite Abu Bishr’s book,

  65. وكاد علي عمراً إذ صار حاكماً

    وقدماً علي كان عمرو يكايده

    Except few remains in the West enamored,

    Our admiration and passion in Andalus,

  66. سقاه بكأس لم يفق من خمارها

    وأورده الأمر الذي هو وارده

    Remains - our awe of him proclaimed-

    Though weak, I loyally stand by him in Egypt,

  67. ولابن زياد شركة في مراده

    وكابن زياد مشرك القلب زائده

    Supporting him as long as I draw breath,

    I roused the grammar of the West from slumber,

  68. هما جرعا إلي عليّ وقنبر

    أفاويق سم لم تنجذ أساوده

    Treating its wounds until its foundations manifested,

    Abu Hayyan revived its deceased knowledge,

  69. أبكي على عمرو ولا عمرو مثله

    إذا مشكل أعيا وأعوز ناقده

    Resuscitating sciences that withered,

    If a Maghribi travels to the East’s frontier,

  70. قضى نحبه شرخ الشباب ولم يرع

    بشيب ولم تعلق بذام معاقده

    He discovers it is grammar’s treasurer,

    We suffered people forgoing gatherings for lessons,

  71. لقد كان للناس اعتناءٌ بعلمه

    بشرق وغرب تستنار فوائده

    With ignorance separating them from guides,

    They delayed granting the deserving precedence,

  72. ولان فلا شخص على الأرض قارئ

    كتاب أبي بشر ولا هو زايده

    Advancing fevered minds in frozen darkness,

    The misguided policy will meet divine requital,

  73. سوى معشر بالغرب فيهم تلفت

    إليه وشوق ليس تخبو مواقده

    Warped beliefs cannot escape fate’s strike,

    Reason defeats caprices – unable to discern,

  74. وما زال منا أهل أندلس له

    جهابذ تبدي فضله وتناجده

    Man’s passions toward Hell steadily lead,

    For twenty pilgrimages we resided in Egypt,

  75. وإني في مصر على ضعف ناصري

    لناصره ما دمت حيا وعاضده

    In their ruler’s company and his courtiers,

    Gaining nothing from them over the ages,

  76. أثار أثير الغرب للنحو كامناً

    وعالجه حتى تبدت قواعده

    Nor finding sincere friends for comfort,

    Consolation comes from those whose tales we told,

  77. وأحيا أبو حيان ميت علومه

    فأصبح علم النحو ينفق كاسده

    Potentially distracting engaged ears,

    O brother - if you visit Granada one day

  78. إذا مغربي حط بالثغر رحله

    تيقن أن النحو أخفاه لاحده

    Carrying greetings as I request,

    Kiss the ground where our kingdom and rule reside-

  79. بلينا بقوم صدروا في مجالس

    لاقراء علم ضل عنهم مراشده

    Gracious, glorious, custom renewed -

    Vanquishing enemies completely, influence absolute,

  80. لقد أخر التصدير عن مستحقه

    وقدم غمر خامد الذهن جامده

    Reviving supporters, the indifferent subdued,

    Bestowing on Islam generosity and victory,

  81. وسوف يلاقي من سعى في جلوسهم

    من الله عقبى ما أكنت عقائده

    Securing the loyal, humiliating the hostile,

    Spreading there glad tidings to our brothers,

  82. علا عقله فيهم هواه فما درى

    بأن هوى الإنسان للنار قائده

    And distinguish the mentor - may his achievements endure!

    May God reward our master, imam and professor,

  83. أقمنا بمصر نحو عشرين حجة

    يشاهدنا ذو أمرهم ونشاهده

    The ink of prolific wisdom flowed from him,

    He exposed brilliant unique minds of the era,

  84. فلما ننل منهم مدى الدهر طائلاً

    ولما نجد فيهم صديقاً نوادده

    So the West boasts what the East falls short of,

    Its chronicler, grammarian and leader,

  85. لنا سلوة فيمن سردنا حديثهم

    وقد يتسلى بالذي قال سارده

    Nurtured by one magnificent of Thaqif descent,

    Through him prestige and aid of the peninsula established,

  86. أخي إن تصل يوماً وبلغت سالماً

    لغرناطة فانفذ لما أنا عاهده

    Never forgetting my vigil at his door,

    From early night as others slumbered.

  87. وقبل ثرى أرض بها حل ملكنا

    وسلطاننا الشهم الجميل عوائده

    His light dispels the darkness of ignorance,

    Unlocking closed gates, repelling threats,

  88. مبيد العدا قتلاً وقد عم شرهم

    ومحيي الندا فضلاً وقد رم هامده

    Though my intentions roam far,

    Thanking him at all times, praising him

  89. أفاض على الإسلام جوداً ونجدةً

    فعز مواليه وذل معانده

    In Granada my soul, in Egypt my body,

    Can individuals transcend their fate?

  90. وعم بها إخواننا بتحية

    وخص بها الأستاذ لا عاش كائده

    Father of Ja’far receive rhymes from one,

    Whose poetry wastefully scatters,

  91. جزى الله عنا شيخنا وإمامنا

    وأستاذنا الحبر الذي عم فائده

    It openly reaches receptive ears, relishing

    Its recital and singing of its verses,

  92. لقد أطلعت جيان أوحد عصره

    فللغرب فخراً أعجز الشرق خالده

    Marvelously shaped, extraordinarily strange,

    Glorious origins, glorious ancestors,

  93. مؤرخه نحويه وإمامه

    محدثه جلت وصحت مسانده

    Without you Master none would value my words in Egypt,

    Or preserve what I compose,

  94. نماه عظيمٌ من ثقيف وإنما

    به استوثقت منه العرى ومساعده

    You refined me to contain perfect verse,

    Undying through ages.

  95. وما أنس لا أنسى سهادي ببابه

    بسبق وغيري نائم الليل راقده

    You empowered dormant thoughts,

    Unleashing unrestrained poetry.

  96. فيجلو بنور العلم ظلمة جهلنا

    ويفتح علما مغلقات وطائده

    I conclude by mentioning you.

    For it is the musk, nay, beyond, even if unattainable.

  97. وإني وإن شطت بنا غربة النوى

    لشاكره في كل وقت وحامده

  98. بغرناطة روحي وفي مصر جثتي

    ترى هل يثني الفرد من هو فارده

  99. أبا جعفر خذها قوافي من فتى

    تتيه على غر القوافي قصائده

  100. يسير بلا إذن إلى الأذن حسنها

    فيرتاح سماع له ومناشده

  101. غريبة شكل كم حوت من غرائب

    مجيدة أصل أنتجتها أماجده

  102. فلولاك يا مولاي ما فاه مقولي

    بمصر ولا حبرت ما أنا قاصده

  103. لهذبتني حتى أحوك مفوفا

    من النظم لا يبلى على الدهر أبده

  104. وأذكيت فكري بعدما كان جامداً

    وقيد شعري بعدما ند شارده

  105. جعلت ختاماً فيه ذكرك إنه

    هو المسك بل أعلى وإن عز ناشده
