1. Time has assailed me with its vicissitudes,

    and I was patient with whatever befell.

  2. It consumed my youth, and loved ones who passed away,

    yet I was not one to be troubled by that.

  3. But since its weakness left my sight helpless,

    I have sat as though a prisoner of the grave.

  4. I once was companionably at ease and settled;

    now I have grown lonely, prey to futile restlessness.

  5. When I seek to look upon a page,

    bleary disorder veils the radiance of my eyes.

  6. And if I direct my mind toward it,

    toward a thought I discern, it then will not stir.

  7. As for anyone sated with learning,

    I remain hungry even for his paucity.

  8. A young man is adorned by his knowledge, just as

    a young woman is adorned by jewelry and earrings.

  9. And though my heart is wounded, I still have

    a tongue that breathes forth praise of my God.
