لَقَد عجِبُوا مِن لُؤلُؤٍ مُتَناثِرٍ
مِن الكَلِمِ الأَعلى فُرادى وَتَوأَمِ
Indeed, they marveled at pearls scattered wide—
pearls of the loftiest words, single and twinned.
وَما بِعَجيبٍ لُؤلؤٌ كانَ قَد مَلا
بِهِ مَسمَعي شَيخي تَناثَرَ مِن فَمِ
Nor is it strange: the pearls with which my shaykh had filled
my hearing spilled, scattering, out of my mouth.
وَبَينَ فَمِ الإِنسانِ وَالسَمعِ نِسبَةٌ
أَلم تَرَ أَنَّ السَمعَ بابُ التَكَلُّمِ
Between the human mouth and hearing lies a kinship.
Have you not seen that hearing is the gateway to speech?
