I decked my page with jewels drawn from your adornments,
and so its jet-black countenance grew radiant:
pearls that graceful maidens, in their passion for them, wish
might be made into ornaments for their throats.
When glimpsed, they leave every eloquent speaker dumb;
the eye is baffled, and the tongue is tongue-tied.
By God, among them are far-famed golden verses,
whose shell-born pearls multiply for the crown.
