إِذا وضِع الإحسانُ في الخَبِّ لَم يُفِد
سِوى كُفرِه وَالحرُّ يجزى بِهِ الشُكرا
When kindness is bestowed on a knave, it yields
nothing but his ingratitude; the noble is requited for it with thanks—
كَغَيثٍ سَقى أَفعى فَجاءَت بِسمها
وَصاحَبَ أَصدافاً فَأثمَرتِ الدُرّا
like rain that watered a viper, which came bearing its venom,
and that rain kept company with oyster shells, which brought forth pearls.
