1. For an age I milked time’s teats,

    and seeing for myself spared me from asking.

  2. I never beheld a faithful friend,

    nor found one whose qualities deserved praise:

  3. wolves in garments, revealing themselves

    to the beholder in the shapes of men.

  4. Whoever among them claims righteousness

    is a heretic steeped in error.

  5. You see the ignorant follow him, content

    to share with him wife or wealth.

  6. So he plunders their wealth and gets at

    their women through vile deeds;

  7. he fraudulently takes a man’s property, then casts off

    his turban and flees across the sands.

  8. And they drag those cuckolded he-goats after a filthy wretch

    who has embraced Qarmatianism in creed and speech.
