أَرى كُلَّ ذي فَقرٍ حَقيرٍ إِذا اِقتَنى
تَعاظَمَ بِالمَلبوسِ مَع فارِهِ البَغلِ
I see every poor, lowly man, once he comes into possessions,
put on airs over his clothing and splendid mule;
يَرى أَنَّهُ قَد جَلَّ في أعيُنِ الوَرى
وَما هُوَ إلا البَغلُ قَد جَلَّ بِالجلِّ
he thinks he has grown great in the eyes of humankind—
yet he is only a mule, made grand by its saddlecloth.
