The kingdom is protected by a king from the noble Azafi tribe

And knowledge lives on through the virtuous Yahya

Of sound judgment, his ideas are not easily misled

By the tricks of men or swayed by pretense

The West has entrusted its affairs

To him, finding safety in this dignified guardian

From a royal family, the Lakhmis, who long prevented

Their neighbors with spear and coated armor

They are kings, no other king compares

Who else can compare jewels to shells?

Though I missed kissing your hand

I sent it with a messenger bird

I imagine cheap pleasures barely touch them

And how many ailing are healed by fantasizing about union

I find comfort in nearness but so many barriers

Like a frigid spinster or prudish shrew

I am not glad I failed to gain prominence

In Egypt, but attained the utmost glory

    The meadow's blooms nursed me

And the garden's blossoms split me open

You revealed me as a full moon among your stars

Until the veil was lifted from me

You unleashed my eyes on open faces

    And intense eyes, tilted noses

Sons of Jafeth, how many enchanters charm them

With song, for the infatuated and tender

But that comfort excited its resident

Memories of a place where I was raised and befriended
