1. O censurer, leave me to my solitude, apart from humankind;

    For among them I see no friend sincere in friendship.

  2. My boon companions are books, from whose knowledge I profit;

    My beloveds spare me from meeting enemies.

  3. The most companionable of them is the Qur’an, for through it lies

    My salvation, whether I ponder or recite.

  4. Indeed, I have roamed through the lands, west and east,

    Searching for anyone who truly called others to God.

  5. Yet I saw none but a seeker after leadership,

    A hoarder of wealth, or a sheikh who worshiped for show.

  6. So I withdrew my hand from them and chose seclusion

    From people, finding God sufficient for me.
