سَبق الدَمعُ بالمسيلِ المَطايا
إِذ نَوى من أحِبُ عَنّيَ نُقله
In its streaming, the tears outstripped the mounts;
when they resolved to carry the one I love away from me.
وَأَجادَ السُطورَ في صفحة الخد
دِ وَلِم لا يُجيدُ وَهوَ ابن مُقله
And it drew the lines masterfully upon the page of the cheek—
—and why should it not excel, being the offspring of an eyeball—an Ibn Muqla?
