  1. This is no ordinary volume, now that it belongs to one

    whose noble qualities are more bountiful and beneficial than the clouds.

  2. It strutted over other volumes in pride and hauteur;

    and proclaim pride and glory over the books.

  3. My worth has indeed grown great, since through my resolve I reached

    the heaven of high honors and passed on to the blazing stars.

  4. Toward the upper world my good fortune is ascending;

    I commune with a leader who favored me with nearness to him.

  5. I discerned that, had Abu

    Firas lived in his age, he would have turned my verse toward his vast generosity.

  6. Then Shihab al-Din would have raised him to a rank

    by which he would become a king over his kind, the Arabs.

  7. And though he has perished, through mentioning him

    an honor remains to him throughout the ages yet to come.

  8. A generous man, with noble deeds in every land,

    born of bounty, that have spread everywhere and reached the West.

  9. Thus they revived Abu Hayyan after a death,

    and quenched him, thirsty, with cool, sweet water.
