1. Never did I know that our camels

    could bear gazelles with heavy haunches,

  2. until I saw al-Hajīn’s son, light of build—

    a gazelle swaying gracefully, bearing camel’s padded feet:

  3. a fawn endowed with every beauty, who came

    to strut in youth’s ample-flowing robe,

  4. like the full moon amid its darkness, a bough in

    its lush vigor, and pearls within their shells;

  5. breathing forth a waft of musk, and smiling

    to reveal translucent pearls radiant with splendor.

  6. A gazelle begotten of a hybrid—a marvel;

    a delicate human from a coarse source.

  7. There is no wonder in one begotten of his own kind;

    the wonder lies in the divergence of species.

  8. He lies who claimed that Nature brought this about;

    this very nature has produced a contradiction.

  9. It is the Creator’s power: He does whatever He wills

    in His creation, through concord and contrast.

  10. This proves that the Fashioner acts

    by free choice, and is the Giver of graces.
