O driver of the white camels, stop—O driver of the white camels!
Do not continue journeying after halting to rest.
What goal do you seek with that departing caravan, boasting
of a she-camel like peacocks in their self-admiration?
How false her display when, after resting, she crawls by day;
how feeble her leaping when she travels before dawn.
Leave her; leave the lean camels, and board a steamship
that folds the trackless wastes as sheets of paper are folded.
Then rise into the air in a balloon, and hurl whatever
fire you find there at every swaggering brute.
Do not cry, “How strange!” at whatever you encounter, nor
by your Lord, set quintuplication against sextuplication.
This is knowledge: how many robes it gives the scholar—
robes that purify, and from it comes every sanctification.
Leave your place and shoot at the white gazelle as you rush
toward the thicket's neighbors; accompany the thicket's denizen.
This will shield you from whatever troubles the nights,
while that is an engine of woe in Iblis's hands.
Why do I see you thus, when you have long been drinking it,
hoping to empty both cup and purse?
What outcome do you hope to find from it
in a street amid crookedness and defilement?
Neither draws you from idleness toward toil:
neither the voice of the call to prayer nor the peal of bells.
Have you had your fill of reclining beneath spreading trees,
smelling roses, boughs of yās, and myrtle?
You strain your poetry like a potter intent
on making the clay cohere, seeking a fine smoothness.
Your boasting is only of draperies, and
your only concern is changing caps.
Hasten to study—for study is loved
by whoever has tasted its pleasure on a day of teaching.
Return to your bough, taking for that bough
the means to water it; never let it dry.
What do you want with such a life, O my hope,
while our head hangs between rebuke and abasement?
Rise for your right, and raise a nation that has fallen;
serve its ascent without deceit or fraud.
Pledge your life to the cause of happiness; do not
mortgage its estate cheaply after bankruptcy.
Here is your homeland, mourning the death of its repose,
and tomorrow it will mourn every foundation.
Look, by God, into its laws until, when
they please you, you prosper through those very laws.
