1. لا تَلوموا الدهر في أَعماله

    لَيسَ للدهر سوى تلك العبر

    Do not blame fate for its deeds

    Fate has nothing but lessons

  2. وافحصوا أَعمالكم كَي تبصروا

    شؤمها يَبدو عيانا للبصر

    Examine your own deeds, so you may see

    Their ill omens are clear to the sight

  3. كلما فكر فيكم مصلح

    عاد تصلي رأسه بعض الفكر

    Whenever a reformer thought of you

    He bows his head with some thought

  4. رب ذي نصح رمى أَخلاقكم

    فاِنثَنَيتُم عنه تَرمون الحجر

    Many sincere advisors cast your morals

    So you recoiled from them, throwing rocks

  5. غير ان الخطب يَزداد إِذا

    جال في نشاتنا منا النظر

    But troubles increase when

    Our gaze roams freely in our leisure

  6. حيث نَلقاهم كَما سوف تَرى

    في حَياة هي أَسباب الخطر

    As we will see them, as the causes of danger

    In a life of pleasures

  7. حب ابراهيم في يوم مَضى

    زَينبا وَالحسن ضمت زينب

    Ibrahim loved Zainab one day

    Zainab and Al-Hassan, Zainab embraced him

  8. ابصرت فيه جَمالا مسها

    مها في قلب ضَعيف عقرب

    Seeing in him a beauty touched by

    Love's arrow in a weak heart

  9. جس كل منهما نبض الَّذي

    اصبحت منه الحَشا تَلتَهِب

    Each felt the pulse of the one

    Whose love set their hearts ablaze

  10. حررا اذ ذاك صكا كتبا

    لوحه توا بما لا يكتب

    They freed themselves when they wrote

    A document whose words aren't written

  11. وَمَشى كل ولكن تركا

    مقلة تَزهو وَعينا تنحب

    And each walked away but left

    A tearful eye and a bleeding heart

  12. يحسبان اليوم عام للقا

    وَاللقا وَيلاه لا يقترب

    Thinking today is for meeting

    While meeting is so far

  13. راح ابراهيم يَجري خببا

    نحو دار البنت يلقى الوالدا

    Ibrahim ran delighted

    To the girl's house to meet her father

  14. طالبا درته من صدف

    ناظرا للرد شكلا اسودا

    Seeking her hand out of passion

    Looking for a dark shaped answer

  15. مُستَعينا بالَّذي يعرف في

    نفسه ان رام ان يسترشدا

    Seeking help from He who knows

    If he wishes, he'll find guidance

  16. معملا فكرته في شرف

    حاسبا أَقوى شَفيع سؤددا

    Weighing his dignity, counting on

    The strongest advocate as support

  17. ناظِرا حسنه في مرآته

    وَهُوَ لا زالَ ظَريفا امردا

    Looking at his beauty in the mirror

    Still a graceful young man

  18. راقِصا للعرس من فرحته

    وَبِهِ أَسعَد عيش واجِدا

    Dancing happily at the wedding

    Having found a joyous stable life

  19. لَم يكد يسمعه يذكرها

    وَجلا حَتّى ازاحَ الوجلا

    As soon as her father heard him mention her

    He frowned to erase the smile

  20. رافِضا مطلبه مستنكفا

    هادما للطفل ذاك الهيكلا

    Refusing his request haughtily

    Destroying the poor boy's dreams

  21. قارئا فيه وَفيها انه

    غير كفء ناقما مُستَثقِلا

    Reading in him and her that he

    Is unfit, resentful and heavy

  22. لاعِنا جرأته في طلب

    شاهد السخط به وَالخطلا

    Cursing his audacity in asking

    Anger and rejection clear on his face

  23. مظهرا عجبا له مستكبرا

    مستلذا فيه ذاك الخيلا

    Showing astonishment and arrogance

    Taking pleasure in crushing him

  24. ضاربا صفحا عَلى ما ضم ما

    بين طيات اللَيالي غافِلا

    Turning a blind eye on what he had

    Hidden in the nights, obliviously

  25. دخل الوالد للبيت وَفي

    وَجهه آيات غش بادية

    The father entered the house with

    Clear signs of deceit on his face

  26. معلنا للبنت ما ازعجه

    حاسبا فيه وجود الدامية

    Announcing to his daughter what irritated him

    Considering her an inanimate thing

  27. ليس يَرضاها له اذ انه

    مفلس يَمشي بها للهاويَة

    He would not accept him for her, for he

    Is penniless, leading her to ruin

  28. وَلَقَد وافاه قبلا احمد

    باذلا فيها المهور الغالية

    Ahmed had asked for her before

    Offering generous bride wealth

  29. وَهُوَ قَد اعطاه اياها وَفي

    مثله تَسعى الفَتاة الغانية

    And he had given her to him, for

    The singing girl seeks the likes of him

  30. لَيسَ يَعنيه اِرتَضَت اعمال من

    باعها ام لم تكن بالراضية

    He does not care if she accepts the actions of

    One who sold her or if she were not content

  31. سمعت زينب ما فاه به

    والد يحسبها مثل الجماد

    Zainab heard her father's words

    Considering her an inanimate thing

  32. فاِستَعانَت بالبكا عَن لومه

    وَهُوَ في دمعتها يَلقى العناد

    She cried to defend herself from his blame

    And he saw stubbornness in her tears

  33. لست أَرضى غير ابراهيم لي

    قولها وهو سداد في سداد

    I will not accept but Ibrahim for me

    Her words were perfectly right

  34. فاِتركوني انتخب زَوجي وَلا

    تَمنَعوني انني لست جماد

    Do not stop me from choosing my husband

    I am not an inanimate thing

  35. انه نصفي فَلا يَختاره

    غير نصفي تلك آراء الرشاد

    He is my other half, none but

    My other half can choose, such is wisdom

  36. ثوب قطن وَالهَنا أليق بي

    من نسيج الخز في ثوب الحداد

    A cotton dress and happiness with him

    Is better than mourning clothes of silk

  37. أَبرق الوالد مدفوعا بما

    قَد رأى من لهجة فيها الصَواب

    Her father was swayed by her

    Words of wisdom and righteousness

  38. واِستَوى يَحتال في تَعذيبها

    واجدا روح انتقام في العَذاب

    And resolved to torture her

    With vengeful, punishing spirit

  39. وَهيَ لا تسمعهم في بيتها

    غير أَصوات البكا والانتحاب

    They do not hear in the house but

    Voices of crying and lamenting

  40. صدرها رحب وَفي طياته

    حب ابراهيم اتمام النصاب

    Her heart is vast, and it hides

    Her love for Ibrahim, perfect and full

  41. ان يَقولوا حاولي نسيانه

    زاد في أَحشائها منه اضطراب

    If they say: try to forget him

    It only increased the turmoil in her heart

  42. أَو أَرادَت بالَّتي اقناعهم

    قابلوا الحجة منها بالسباب

    If she tried to convince them

    They met her argument with abuse

  43. حملوها وَهيَ رمز اللطف ما

    لَيسَ في امكانها أَن تَستَطيع

    They carried her, she who is the epitome of gentleness

    What she cannot do

  44. اعملوا المنجل في زهرتها

    جندَلوها بين أَوراق الرَبيع

    Wield the scythe on her flower

    Confine her among spring's leaves

  45. واِستَباحوا صنعهم تبا له

    في عصور نحن فيها من صَنيع

    Justifying their actions, shame

    In an age where we are artful

  46. لَيتَ شعري أَي نفس لا تَرى

    ذلة في ذلك الأَمر الفَظيع

    I wonder what soul does not see

    Disgrace in this horrendous matter

  47. أَي شخص لا يَرى الخنجر في

    قَلبه أَولى بذا الصنع الشَنيع

    What person does not see the dagger in

    His heart is more deserving of this vile act

  48. وَهُوَ لا يَحتاج في الناس إِلى

    ناصر تلك المَبادي أَو شَفيع

    It does not need in people

    A supporter or intercessor for these principles

  49. غابَت الشمس وَفيها أَمل

    لوجود البنت في وقت الصَباح

    The sun set, and with it hope

    To find the girl in the morning

  50. وَهيَ قَد سارَت إِلى مخدعها

    تعمل الجهد لاخماد الجراح

    She had gone to her solitude

    To put out the burning pain

  51. يا لَها من ليلة لَيلاء قَد

    صرع الجد بها ذاكَ المُزاح

    Oh, what a dark night that

    Defeated the strong with ease

  52. وَإِذا ما طلعت شمس الضحى

    وَأَعادَت روح هاتيك البطاح

    When the morning sun rose

    Restoring life to the dunes

  53. كانَت البنت تلاقيها وَفي

    روحها طعنة ذياك الكفاح

    The girl met it with in her soul

    A stab from that struggle

  54. وَهيَ كالمُعتاد الا أنها

    في الفَضا طوعا لأَغراض الرياح

    She was as usual, but

    Bending with the wind's purposes

  55. بعد يوم كانَ ابراهيمها

    فوق رمس ضمها بين الرموس

    The next day, her Ibrahim

    Was over the hill she was buried under

  56. حامِلا زهرا بَديعا قَد حَوى

    من بَديع الحسن ما تَحوي الغروس

    Carrying beautiful flowers that contained

    Beauty like the bushes contain

  57. وَهُوَ يَبكي ربة الحسن الَّتي

    بعده أَمسَت إِلى الدود عروس

    Crying for the beauty queen who

    After him became a worm's bride

  58. لاعنا أَخلاقنا مُستَبشعا

    عادة آباءنا كانَت تدوس

    Cursing our abhorrent traditions

    That were our father's way to tread

  59. هَكَذا أَمسَت تناجي روحة

    روحها بين انقباض وَعبوس

    Thus her soul spoke to itself

    Contracting and frowning

  60. يجمع الأزهار لكن يا ترى

    للتي في قبرها أَم للشموس

    Picking flowers, but does he

    Pick them for one in a grave or the sun?
