شوقي إلى زينب شديد شائق

والقلب إليها لا يزال خافق

My longing for Zaynab is fierce and compelling,

And for her my heart keeps ceaselessly throbbing.

وأدمعي من مقلتي دوافق

شوقاً ونومي للجفون مفارق

From my eyes my tears come streaming,

Out of longing—and sleep has forsaken my eyelids.

خدود زينب زينت بتوريد

وجيد زينب جيد ظبية البيد

Zaynab’s cheeks are adorned with a rosy bloom,

And Zaynab’s neck is the neck of a desert gazelle.

نفسي فدا زينب وذلك الجيد

لقد حوت زينب لحسن فائق

My soul be ransom for Zaynab and for that neck;

Zaynab has indeed gathered surpassing beauty within her.

زينب مني قلبي وكل قصدي

زينب لها أرفع محلّ عندي

Zaynab is my heart and all my purpose;

Zaynab holds the highest place with me.

ما حال زينب يا نسيم بعدي

أما أنا مشتاق صبّ وامق

How does Zaynab fare in my absence, O breeze?

As for me, I am a yearning, lovesick, ardent lover.

فانّ زينب قرّة النواظر

وانّ زينب منية الخواطر

For Zaynab is the delight of every gaze,

And Zaynab is the heart’s cherished desire.

لولا صلاح المكرمات عامر

لأطير اليها وأقطع العلائق

Were it not for rectitude, where noble virtues thrive,

I would fly to her and sever every bond.
