1. قد أطلنا بالباب أمسِ القعودا

    وجُفِينا به جفاءً شديدا

    We sat waiting by the door yesterday

    Spurned and rejected forcefully

  2. وذممنا العبيدَ حتى إذا نح

    ن بَلونا الموَلَى عَذَرنا العبيدا

    We blamed the servants until when we were tested

    We excused the servants, blaming ourselves

  3. وعلى موعدِ أتيناك معلو

    م وأمر مُؤكَّدِ تأكيدا

    We came to you at the appointed time

    With sure and confirmed intention

  4. فأقمنا لا الإذنُ جاء ولا جا

    ءَ رسولٌ قال انصرفْ مطرودا

    Yet no permission came, nor did a messenger

    Saying, “Turn away, dismissed!”

  5. وصبَرنا حتى رأينا قُبيلَ ال

    ظُهر برذونًَ بعضِهم مردودا

    We were patient until just before noon

    When some of them came out, rejected

  6. واستقرَّ المكانُ بالقوم والغ

    لمانُ في ذاك يمنحونا صدودا

    The place filled with people and roughnecks

    Who scorned and blocked our way

  7. ويُشيرون بالمضيّ فلمّا

    أُحرجوا جرَّدوا لنا تجريدا

    Hinting that we should go, until when

    They were embarrassed, they rudely cast us out

  8. فانصرفنا في ساعةٍ لو طرحت ال

    لَّحمَ فيها نيّاً كُفيتَ الوقودا

    So we left in a moment, that if flesh

    Were cooked then, the burning wood would suffice

  9. فلعمري لقد كنت تعتدّ لي ذن

    باً عظيماً وكنتَ فظّاً حقودا

    By my life, you surely thought me

    A grave sinner, harsh and spiteful

  10. وطلبتَ المزيدَ في عذابِ

    فوق هذا لَمَا وَجدتَ مزيدا

    You sought further torment beyond this

    When you found no more to add

  11. كأنَ ظني بك الجميلَ فألفي

    تُكَ من كلِّ ما ظننتُ بعيدا

    It was as if my good opinion of you was in vain

    I deemed you far from all I suspected you of

  12. فعليكَ السلامُ تسليمَ من لا

    يضمن الدهرَ بعدها أن يعودا

    Peace be upon you, the farewell of one

    Who knows not if he will return again
