1. أقول له والجوسقُ الفرد لائحٌ

    ونحن بغربي الصراة جوانح

    I say to him, and the lonely new moon is shining,

  2. وشيب البدر الدجى وترنمت

    على شرفات القصر ورقٌ صوادحُ

    And the moonlight in the darkness is growing old,

    And leaves on the palace balconies are rustling,

  3. وقد بردتْ كاساتنا وتنسمتْ

    رياحٌ مريضاتُ الهبوبِ صحائحُ

    Our cups have cooled, and the winds have sighed,

    Winds that blow gently at first light,

  4. إذا كنتَ مختاراً لنفسك صاحباً

    فلا كان واشينا ولا كان كاشحُ

    If you have chosen a friend for yourself,

    He was neither a gossip or a slanderer.
