1. May God reward the house of Khāqān on my behalf—for they

    have lengthened my tongue with praise and gratitude.

  2. For me, they sought to appease Fate, though Fate was wrathful,

    and made it grant me favor despite its loathing and disdain.

  3. They raised my name to renown and stretched my hands

    toward the heights, reviving all remembrance of me that had died.

  4. They taught me my own worth, and through their noble lineage magnified

    what the people had belittled of my standing.

  5. ʿUbayd Allāh has sufficed me—may he never cease to be one

    through whom God delivers me from a care that once constricted my breast.

  6. He sufficed me though I had not asked him to, offering freely—

    a noble youth whose generosity is neither withheld nor scant;

  7. a youth who desires wealth only so that he may give it away,

    and never meets the face of truth with treachery.
