My hand does not shrink from the cup, taking delight in drinking it;
My hand does not reject the cup, finding joy in drinking it,
But it shuns the cup when shared with a filthy, ignoble wretch.
But it rejects the cup when shared with a vile scoundrel.
Over such a cup, only one like me shall be my drinking companion;
Over such a cup, my drinking companion must be my equal,
And if I find no peer, I retire with it alone.
And if I find no equal, I seclude myself with it alone.
