The petitioner visits your bounty, and your keen sword visits the—

rebel; hands and necks receive them both.

Each day, through you, the house of glory gains wealth

and riches, while the treasury falls into poverty.

How often have you plunged into a heaving, sea-like abyss,

where the water of death gushes—may you be spared—

among young warriors, lions of war, whose last sparks of life

    are preserved for them by keen blades amid battle’s terror;

each one a husband to Life, entering no covenant with her

except on condition that, in war, he may readily divorce her.

At the fore of every host, on every day of battle,

as though each, within the horses’ breasts, were a pupil of an eye.

Aim wherever you wish in this world, and you shall attain it—for

the sky has no breadth, nor the sea any depths.

Whoever doubts that you were created to possess it

is like one who doubts that God is the Creator.

Thus heaven has another heaven in your loftiness, and the—

horizons, other horizons in your praiseworthy renown.
