ما لِهذا الدَهرِ أَبدى
لِلعُلا وَجهاً وَقاحا
What is it with this age? It has shown
Why must time always
What ails this Time, that it has revealed
glory a brazen face.
Show me its brazen face?
To high nobility a face of impudence,
فَأَراني عِبرَةً أَن
دَمِيَ البَدرُ وَقاحا
Then it showed me, as a lesson, that
My tears like the bright moon
And shown me a warning lesson in that
the full moon bled—brazenly.
Shine brazenly on my face
The full moon has bled and festered.
