1. Life after you has wearied me;

    and in my death lies faithfulness to you.

  2. You perished, and then the consoler began

    by saying that patience and consolation are good.

  3. The gravest calamity is parting from a beloved

    who was himself the cure for my sickness.

  4. An age has darkened that he once illumined;

    after its darkening, can there be any light?

  5. Jumādā has frozen our waters;

    behold tears—they are blood.

  6. He wept. And even if I were a hard rock,

    water would surely flow from me over you.

  7. Are you not my heart and the core of my liver?

    Fate has struck me in them both.

  8. Praise be to God; I raise no objection.

    Whatever God wills is justice from Him.

  9. I would have discharged every claim of love,

    if only my soul could be your ransom.

  10. Ah, for him through whom I hoped for happiness—

    but misery would not allow it.

  11. Calamities are the scourge of our wealth,

    and mortality is the scourge of the world.

  12. Adam, though the first-created, is subject to death,

    and all his children are alike.

  13. What a crescent it was that lit my night!

    In him were both radiance and exalted splendor.

  14. What a spring it was that adorned my life!

    In him were life-giving rain and modesty.
