    salute the land and greet its people.

  2. And he said: “Set free, you noble ones,

    your glory, held hostage in captivity.

  3. If freedom granted as a favor has become all but impossible,

    then let our lives be the homeland’s ransom.

  4. Let the sword proclaim against the English

    the decisive verdict—for eloquent is its tongue.

  5. Shall the call of glory remain among you

    a secret, when this is the hour to declare it openly?

  6. Indeed, a young man’s life has

    no price but honor—or its death.

  7. Whoever buys a life of humiliation at the price of honor—

    that is loss, and that is the ruinous bargain.
