ففي المغاني معاني الحسن والكرم

The neighborhood of singers between flags and knowledge

For in songs are meanings of beauty and generosity

يهيج برح الصبا للمستهام صباً

في نشرها بشر قرب الركب من اضم

The morning breeze stirs for the inspired one a morning breeze

In its diffusion good news for the nearing caravan from the gatherer

اراق بعدي لهم عيش فبعدهم

اراق فيض دم من دمعي السجم

After me it made easy living for them so after them

It spilled a stream of blood from my overflowing tears

ان السهاد نفى جسمي ضناً فغدا

يحكي السهى دنفاً في حب بدرهم

Indeed sleepiness denied my body stingily so it became

Telling of sleepiness weakly in love for a few coins

اتملك العين من عين الظبا نظراً

ودونها الاسد تسطو بالضبا الخذم

Do you possess the gaze of the antelope from the antelope's eye

While the lion seizes the prey boldly with canines bared

ريم الصريم إذا رمت العقيق ففي

عقيق دمعي غنى عنه فلا ترم

Pearly white Rym if she casts carnelian then in

The carnelian of my tears lies wealth making hers unnecessary to cast

في وجهك ابن ابي سلمى وبهجته

وفي لواحظك الوسنى ابو هرم

In your face is Ibn Abi Salma and his joy

And in your cheeks softness, Abu Hirm

ضل الفؤاد فظل الجسم حلف ضني

فالجسم في مرض والقلب في ضرم

The heart went astray so the body swore bitterness

Thus the body in illness and the heart in grief

اني ابحت دمي عمداً فلا قود

عليهم في الهوى اني ابحت دمي

I shed my blood deliberately so there is no retribution

Upon them in love, I shed my blood

رأيت جورهم عدلا وهجرهم

وصلا وذلي عزاً في ودادهم

I saw their tyranny as justice and their abandonment

As union and my humiliation as honor in their affection

صبري وجسمي وطرفي والفؤاد أسى

واه نحيل غزير الدمع في الم

My patience and my body and my glance and the heart in sorrow

Alas a lean overpouring of tears in anguish

يفك كل أسير في بيوتهم

الا أسير جفون من ظبائهم

It frees every prisoner in their homes

Except the prisoner of their gazelles' eyelids

فليت شعري أوجد أم لهيب غضاً

ما أودعوه فؤادي يوم بينهم

I wish my soul knew, did it find

What they placed in my heart the day I was among them

يهيج لي عاذلي في ذكرهم طرباً

فالعذل أحسن في سمعي من النغم

For me their reproacher rouses in remembering them an ecstasy

For reproach is better heard than tunes to my ears

وصاحب لامني لما رأى كلفي

لو ذقت طعم الهوى يا صاح لم تلم

And my blamer for when he saw my infatuation

If you tasted the flavor of passion O friend you would not blame

يزيد طبع الفتى في الحب طيب شذى

كما تضوعت الأزهار بالنسم

The lad's nature increases in pleasantness like

The flowers that thrived with the breeze

مخضت رايك واستجمعت زبدته

ولست عندي على راي بمتهم

I collected my opinion and extracted its cream

Yet I have no peers to charge with error

فجئت بالنقض والإبرام منتقياً

من الحجى أفصح الالفاظ والكلم

So I came with refutation and resolve choosing

The most eloquent words and phrases from argument

وقد تبوأ منا واحد رشداً

فكل إذا شئت أمرينا إلى حكم

And one among us assumed integrity

So each, whenever you desire our judgment for an arbiter

حاشا الهوى وهو علق ان تفوز به

نفس العذول الغبي الساقط الهمم

Far be passion, it's a disgrace, that an ignoble

Foolish fallen soul succeeds in it

إني رأيت كرام الناس في تعب

وأنت من تعب العلياء في سلم

I saw the generous people in toil

While you are spared the toil of the lofty in peace

هم اسعروا مهجتي ناراً فخضت بها

في بحر عشق بموج العشق ملتطم

They set afire my deepest being so I plunged with it

In a sea of love with the wave of passionate love colliding

والحب أوله حلو وآخره

مرّ ولذته تفضي إلى ندم

And love, its beginning is sweet and its end bitter

And its pleasure leads to regret

لا والهوى وليالينا التي سلفت

ما حلت من عهدكم يا جيرة العلم

No, by passion and by our nights that passed

Not relieved since your era O literate neighbors

ان ابق بعدكم حيا فلا عجب

بقيت لكن لطول الحزن والالم

If after you I remain alive then no wonder

I remained but for prolonged grief and pain

ان أومض الخال من شرقي كاظمة

حكاه دمعي بمنهل ومنسجم

When the moles on my cheek fade concealing

My tears depicted them with a fountain and stream

قالوا الصبابة سقم لا شفاء له

قلت الوصال شفاً من ذلك السقم

They said youth is an illness with no cure

I said: union is the cure for that illness

قالوا سلوت فقلت العيش بعدكم

قالوا الفت فقلت النجم في الظلم

They said: I asked so I said: life after you

They said: so I wandered, I said: the star in the darkness

كأن جسمي وقطر الدمع بغمره

سلك يلوح بدرّ فيه منتظم

As if my body and the teardrop in its abundance

Became a gleaming full moon arranged within it

اغني بجوهر دمعي ناظري على

اني من الصبى في فقر وفي عدم

I sing with the jewel of my tearful glances that

I am destitute and without means among the youth

دعني ارق نسقا دمعي فلا بدل

منهم وان منعوني نيل عطفهم

Let me shed my tears' necklace for they will not

Change their stance, though they forbid attaining their kindness

وربما شب في الاحشاء جمر غضاً

جنح الدجى ذكر جيران بذي سلم

A coal of passion sometimes ignites in my core

When the darkness recalls my neighbors in Abi Salma's home

طالت ليالي النوى حزناً كما قصرت

من المسرة لي أيام وصلهم

The nights of pining grew long in sorrow while shortened

For me were the days of joy with their company

فما لليل النوى صبح يلوح وهل

في الصبح لي راحة من لاعج الالم

So why does the night of pining have no dawn looming? And is

There respite in the dawn for me from ceaseless agony?

كم صابرت همتي صرف الزمان ولم

تضعف وصرف النوى أو هي قوى هممي

How much my resolve endured time's turns but did not

Weaken, the nights of pining rather empowered my determination

يا نفس جرعتني مرّ الغرام بهم

حتى اريق باسياف الجفون دمي

O soul you made me taste the bitter of passion for them

Until I spill with the swords of my eyelids my blood

والصبر كان حميما لي فاسلمني

غدراً فكابدت أشجاني بغير حمي

Patience was a confidante to me so betraying me

Mercilessly I suffered my sorrows without a protector

يا قلب هل لك ان يمحو الضلال هدى

بمدح خير البرايا سيد الأمم

O heart can you erase misguidance with the guidance

In praise of best of creation, master of nations

طه ابي القاسم الهادي البشير رسو

ل الله صفوة عبدالله ذي الكرم

Taha Abu al-Qasim the guide bearer of good tidings messenger

Of Allah elite of Abdullah the generous

زاكي النجار كريم الطبع متصف

بالجود والباس والعلياء والعظم

Cleansing the carpenter, kind in nature marked with

Generosity, heroism, loftiness and might

الباذخ الهمم ابن الباذخ الهمم

ابن الباذخ الهمم ابن الباذخ الهمم

Lofty in ambitions son of the lofty in ambitions

Son of the lofty in ambitions son of the lofty in ambitions

منزه الذات عن نقص يلم بها

قد هزبت واصطفاها بارئ النسم

Of immaculate being beyond blemish touching it

Has it stumbled? And He chose it, fanned by the soul's breath

عظيم خلق به الخلق اهتدى رشداً

متمم كرم الاخلاق والشيم

Great in manners the manners were guided by it to guidance

Perfecting honor in morals and traits

سامي المعارج مهدي المناهج قض

اء الحوائج غوث الناس في الازم

High in ascension, guide of paths, fulfilling wishes, savior

Of mankind, path of the clear, wide road

ونور قدس حباه النور من شرف

بالنور يهدي سبيل الرشد كل عمي

He surpassed mankind in manners and conduct

And overwhelmed them with generosity including the blind

ان كان آنسي موسى النار من بعد

فالمصطفى آنس الأنوار من أمم

His generosity is the sea in its flow of knowing

And his knowledge the sea casting gems of words

إن كان أحيى المسيح الميت معجزة

فذكر أحمد يحبى بالي الرمم

He quenched the gardens of hopes with his generosity's comfort

Erasing the plains so they blossomed with blessings and boons

الناطق الفصل في قول يضمنه

براعة البالغين الحكم والحكم

And the likes of him the hopeful may hope but can

Any equal to that unique, singular, learned one be hoped for?

غيث المؤمل غوث المستجير به

هادي الأنام سبيل الواضح اللقم

Guided, guided one seeking aid, aided one seeking victory, glorious one

Seeking help, helping river, honored courageous one

فاق البرية في خلق وفي خلق

وعمهم كرماً بالنائل العمم

His feats fell short of my grasping them so imaginations grew

Of every eloquent, insightful orator inept in perception

فجوده البحر في اسداد عارفة

وعلمه البحر يلقي جوهر الكلم

His names described his deeds so they became

Recited letters of "I swear" out of reverence

سقى رياض الأماني جود راحته

محاً فازهرن بالالاء والنعم

He is the hoped for in life, the intercessor in

The next so hold fast and seek refuge in him and cling

ومثله فليرجي المرتجون وهل

يرجى مثيل لذاك المفرد العلم

By him the Arabs gained might and time submitted to them

And crowns bowed down in submission to turbans

مسترشد رشاد مستنجد نجد

مسترفد رافد مستمجد شهم

When he undertook command, determined

Might faltered from it while every resolute one hesitated

محمد المصطفى اصفاه خالقه

بالحمد في اشرف الايات والكلم

With the most wondrous resolute lofty ambitions

Unsheathed swords shone and smiling countenances radiated

رسول صدق عن الارشاد لم يرم

يوماً وغير رضا باريه لم يرم

And he unsheathed from his resolves the sharp swords in earnest

West and east so the state of injustice perished

لو كان في الرسل من في الفضل بشركه

ما خصه الله بالمعراج والعظم

And the stars of monotheism shone brightly

Illuminating the darkness' gloom with the full moon of guidance

فآدم قد حوى فضل السجود به

ونال عفواً به عن زلة القدم

A prophecy they attempted to conceal but it appeared

That suns enhanced it beyond concealment

وفيه قد رجعت نار الخليل له

برداً فنال رغيد العيش في الضرم

As if his law is daylight the darknesses of misguidance vanished

By it, the pitch black night of blindness vanished

سمح يحقق آمال النفوس فما

يخيب راجيه من لطف ومن كرم

Of his pure morals is the string of his river of abundance

Flowing with the pure spring of delectable wine

فللجناة لديه عفو مقتدر

وللعفاة لديه جود مبتسم

So thanks and praise and reward are gains

In the best gains, in the best gains

اسماؤه وصفت افعاله فغدت

من الجلالة تتلوا أحرف القسم

He did not attain any of the life's vanities though it presented

Its treasures desirously yet he did not cast

هو المؤمل في الدنيا المشفع في

الأخرى فلذ وتمسك فيه واعتصم

When I resorted to him complaining of

Wretchedness, I became secure and the wretchesness vanished with boons

عزت به العرب وانقاد الزمان لها

واصبحت تخضع التيجان للمم

He invades the enemy with steeds'

Forelocks bearing victory's blackness, not the crimson

إذ قام مضطلعا بالأمر مفترعاً

عزاً تقاعس عنه كل معتزم

With injustice he rewards the unjust tyrants to him

Yet his injustice is justice in disciplining the transgressor

في السلم يحيى بعذب الجود ذا آمل

في الحرب يردي بمر البأس ذا اضم

The white swords' blades from the past of his resolves

When unsheathed are clad in the redness of slaughter

بعزم أروع سامي الهم منصلت

ورفد ابلج طلق الوجه مبتسم

He divides the white and the black fine coats between them

So for the chests the white coats and for the turbans the black

واستل من عزمه عضب الغرار ارمضا

غرباً وشرقاً فبادت دولة الضم

While his heart for piety and remembrance divided

And his palm, the dew, the sword and the pen

واشرقت انجم التوحيد محدقة

منه ببدر هدى يجدو دجى الظلم

Deeds whose tails fell short of reaching so fancies sprouted

Of every eloquent, articulate, comprehending orator

نبوة حاولوا اخفاءها فبدت

ان الشموس سناها غير منكتم

A forbearance by which mountains are humbled

Composed, ardent that nourishes reason

كأن شرعته ضوء النهار جلت

من الضلالة ليلا حالك العتم

If he wished to make the world for its inhabitants

An eternal abode, it would be saved from ruin by oblivion

من صفو اخلاقه سلسال كوثره

جرى بصفو معين سائغ شبم

For his day is infinite time itself and he is all creation

Rather he was the cause of existence's creation in antiquity

فشكره والثنا والاجر مغتنم

في خير مغتنم في خير مغتنم

May Allah, Lord of the Throne send blessings upon him whenever

Verses of his virtues were recited in Noon and the Pen

ما نال من عرض الدنيا وقد عرضت

كنوزها رغبة عنها ولم يرم

And upon his family, the strangers, the companions of the gown and whoever

Made the Prophet's family their enemies, by them

إذا لجأت إليه فاشتكيت له

بؤساً أمنت وزال البؤس بالنعم

After him they are the best of Allah's creations, ennobled

Above all others before the Tablet and Pen's creation

يغزو العدا بموادي الخيل حاملة

غلب الأسود أسود الحرب لا الأجم

They are fierce lions, the most noble lions known

The ever-victorious, filled with their downpours

بالظلم يجزي العداة الظالمين له

وظلمه العدل في تاديب مجترم

Armored with blades in every battlefield

Where arguments and the place of white blades and turbans

وتخجر البيض من ماضي عزائمه

إذا انتضاها فتكسى حمرة العنم

With goodly abodes that when they shone reflected

The abodes' splendor with radiant, smiling faces

يقسم السمر والبيض الرقاق لهم

فللصدور القنا والبيض للقمم

So the flowers shine and the blooms scent

Their fragrance and brilliance thus buds split and sniffed

وقلبه للتقى والذكر منقسم

وكفه الندى والسيف والقلم

They excelled so the horizons folded in their mention

Spreading it until musk's honour vanished among nations

مآثر قصرت عن دركها ونبت

أوهام كل بليغ بارع فهم

What cooled drink is impaired for the thirsty?

Sweeter and cooler than repeating their mention

حلم تخف الجبال الراسيات به

رزانة وندى يربى على الديم

Kings of perfection the rule of their knowledge is

Justice and their guidance's illumination shone knowledge

لو شاء ان يجعل الدنيا لساكنها

دار الخلود نجت من سطوة العدم

Chivalrous they were known for chivalry and marked with

Merit and honor fulfilling their pride

فيومه الدهر وهو الخلق قاطبة

بل كان علة خلق الكون في القدم

No flaw in them but piety and that they

Are swords polished by their Lord

صلى عليه اله العرش ما تليت

ايات فضل له في نون والعلم

How they clarified our laws and bestowed favors

And dispelled anguish from us by their good tidings

وآله الغر اصحاب العباء ومن

قد بأهل المصطفى اعداءه بهم

I have stated while the best words are truest

The tongue of truth Ali regarding them

هم بعده خير خلق الله شرفهم

على الورى قبل خلق اللوح والقلم

For in Ali, Commander of the Faithful is wisdom of thought

And in his glory many a verse arranged

هم الخضارم فارشف در عرفهم

خضر وامالنا بيض برفدهم

His aide, brother, superior to them and father

Of his two grandsons, pride distinguishes him especially

المغمدون الضبا في كل معترك

حيث الحجى ومناط البيض واللمم

Partner of Taha if not for his prophecy

And in the imamate a virtue with no associates

بدور حسن إذا ما اشرقوا عكسوا

ضوء البدور بغر الأوجه الوسم

He never wearied supporting the Prophet's law with

Forearms and eloquent tongue and mouth

فالزهر تشرق والأزهار تعبق عن

شذاهم وسناهم فانتشق وشم

Radiant, strong, stalwart, helper

Judicious, just, steadfast, protected

تارجوا فطوى الافاق ذكرهم

نشراً به ضاع عرف المسك في الأمم

His sword a torrent cleansing the dregs

Making it a meadow none but fate's drinking cups sampled

ما البارد العذب معلولا لذي ظمأ

احلى واعذب من تكرير ذكرهم

Trust returned in his good and pure water never

Betrayed by mirage which came to the thirsty

ألو الكمال ملاك العلم حكمهم

عدل ولمع هداهم ساطع العلم

By the imam al-Hamam al-Murtada I placed

My hands so my hands shone and worries receded

غطارف عرفوا بالعرف واتصفوا

بالفضل والشرف الموفي بفخرهم

And his elite companions who revived his

Law with revival, growth shot up from the plentiful rain

لا عيب فيهم سوى التقوى وانهم

مصالت خشن في ذات ربهم

Prey they hunted flourished with goodness for their branch

Their branch translates purity from the goodness of their origin

كم أوضحوا سننا كما اسبغوا منناً

وكم جلوا حزناً عنا ببشرهم

Swords pass through their hands when destinies rage

In fights, the eagles and vultures' necks are refuge

وقد بسطت وخير القول اصدقه

لسان صدق عليا في عليهم

They are the warriors, if one day they are wronged

Their swords in the heads of enemies will reconcile

ففي علي أمير المؤمنين ذكا

فكر وفي مجده قد رق منتظمي

With every glittering Indian sword for every

Ambitious with every pile of corpses

وزيره وأخوه دونهم وابو

سبطيه فخر به قد خص في القسم

They do not disappoint the violator of good in his appointment

And perhaps they miss the appointment with vengeance

قسيم طه علا لولا نبوته

وفي الامامة فضل غير منقسم

O good land the heavens poured upon you Ali

So thank the blesser and seize the opportunity

لم يأل شرعة طه جهد منتصر

بساعد ولسان ناطق وفم

He carried your soil, musk at its essence

Perfectly innovated by the hand of favours and wisdom

مضاء ذي لبد مستبسل نجد

وحكم ملتزم بالعدل معتصم

An orchard the Trustworthy Spirit overlooks

Above the leafstalks when called from the servants

فسيفه جدول يجلو الفرند به

روضاً سواه سوام الحتف لم تسم

You are like Paradise the singular, characterized

By eternal gardens and the blessings within them

وردت في حبه العذب الزلال ولم

اخدع بلمع سراب من اتاه ظمي

Can the soul attain its comforts a second time

By visiting so companionship returns to the sanctuary?

وبالامام الهمام المرتضى علقت

يدي فلاح فلاحي وانجلت غممي

My master I have needs I intended with them

While you are the most generous relied upon and obliged

وصحبه النجب المحيين سنته

احياء نبت الربى بالوابل الرذم

If access to kindness is through its means

To the generous then the successful attains his wish

صيد جحا جحه قد طاب فرعهم

ففرعهم معرب عن طيب اصلهم

Since you became the intercessor for mankind

The banner of your praise became unfurled over nations

تمضي الصوارم أيديهم إذا كهمت

وفي النزال قرى العقبان والرخم

My sins overwhelmed me so I faced them

With an army of worries in crowds within my core

هم المحاريب ان صالوا بيوم وغى

صلت سيوفهم في ارؤس البهم

The soul is like wool purifying its impurities

The fire of worries so it climbs to lofty ambitions

بكل اهيف لدن القد منعطف

يرنو بازرق مشغوف بكل كمي

I made your praise provision and refuge for me

So accept my praise, O my provision and my refuge

لا يخلفون لباغي الخير موعده

وربما اخلفوا الميعاد بالنقم

The Most High has granted life and worries receded

The local rose and my words ascended

يا أرض طيبة قد طلت السماء علا

بالمصطفى فاشكري النعماء واغتنمي

And man's value is in what good he performs

And in your praise what my value climbs to

قد ضم تربك وهو المسك جوهرة

قد ابدعتها يد الالطاف والحكم

Sometimes words grace the hearing by their essence

And sometimes words shock the hearing into deafness

دوح بها يشرف الروح الأمين على

غر الملائك إذ يدعى من الخدم

Muhammad you made thinking of you virtuous

O essence of kindness, benevolence and generosity

كانك الجنة الفردوس واصفة

جنان خلد وما فيهن من نعم

Fulfill my hopes and intercede for me for I held

Onto a rope of hope that will not sever

فهل تنال مناها النفس ثانية

بزورة فيحل الأنس بالحرم

يا سيدي لي حاجات عنيت بها

وأنت أكرم مامول وملتزم

وسائل البر إن كانت وسائله

إلى الكريم أصاب النجح من أمم

ومذ غدوت شفيعا للأنام غدا

لواء حمدك منشوراً على الأمم

قد كاثرتني ذنوبي فالتقيت بها

بجيش هم على الأحشاء مزدحم

والنفس كالتبر تستصفي شوائبها

نار الهموم فترقى باذخ الهمم

جعلت مدحك لي ذخراً ومعتصما

فاقبل مديحي يا ذخري ومعتصمي

فصار قد حي المعلى وانجلت غممي

وسار مدحي المحلى واعتلت كلمي

وقيمة المرء ما قد كان يحسنه

وفي مديحك ما تغلو به قيمي

ورب قول يحلي السمع جوهره

ورب قول يروع السمع بالصمم

محمد بك اضحى ظنه حسناً

يا معدن اللطف والاحسان والكرم

حقق رجائي واشفع لي فقد علقت

يدي بحبل رجاء غير منفصم
