1. لعل النوى تدنو فتجتمع الشمل

    فلا عيش الا من وصالك لي يحلو

    Perhaps hope draws near, so we reunite

    For I have no life without being close to you

  2. فدى لك نفسي كيف ما شئت فاحتكم

    فمثلك لا يسلى ومثلي لا يسل

    I sacrifice myself for you, however you wish, so judge

    For one like you feels no comfort, and one like me feels no peace

  3. وما أنت ذو مثل فاسلو بغيره

    لأنك ذو حسن يعز له المثل

    And you have no equal, so seek solace in another

    For you have a beauty to which none can compare

  4. يلوم على فرط المحبة عاذل

    واضيع شيء في محبتك العذل

    One who rebukes the excess of love is unjust

    And I have wasted nothing in loving you

  5. إذا كان حكم الذات اشرف مبدأ

    فحكمك يا ذات الجمال هو العدل

    If the rule of self is the noblest principle

    Then your rule, O essence of beauty, is justice

  6. حياتي ولا من عليك لك الفدا

    فمن واجب الحب المفاداة والبذل

    My life is yours, I owe you my sacrifice

    For devotion and generosity are duties of love

  7. وحبك اقوى إذ ينازع سلوتي

    واصلح فليبق الهوى إنه الأصل

    And my love for you is stronger, though it wrestles my will

    So let passion remain, for it is the origin

  8. وما أنا إلا عاشق قد تقاسمت

    هواه المعالي الغر والحدق النجل

    I am but a lover who shares his love

    For the high ideals, the tender cheek, the soft glance

  9. وما اختلفت سبل الهوى غير انني

    أواصل نهجاً فيه تأتلف السبل

    The paths of love differ only in that I

    Follow a course where the paths converge

  10. معاني جمال غير ما افتتنوا به

    فلا حور العينين منه ولا الكحل

    Meanings of a beauty unlike what others were infatuated by

    Not the seducing eyes, nor the kohl

  11. يقولون حد العشق حب مخامر

    وذلك جنس والثبات له فصل

    They say the limit of love is intoxicating passion

    That is one kind, but constancy has its distinction

  12. إلى الفضل يعزو نفسه غير واحد

    وما كل معزو يقر له الفضل

    More than one attributes himself to virtue

    Yet not all who profess virtue are truly virtuous

  13. وكم مدّع حب الحقيقة وحده

    وليس له منها دنو ولا وصل

    How many pretend to love the truth alone

    Yet have neither closeness nor connection to it

  14. وما أسعدت سعد هواه بنظرة

    ولا جاملته في محبتها جمل

    And she did not make blissful the bliss of his love with a glance

    Nor indulged him in her affection with beauty

  15. ومن كان ذا رهط فأهل طريقتي

    هم الرهط لي دون الأقارب والأهل

    As for those who share my ways, they are my comrades

    Not my kin or family

  16. رجال قليل غير ان غناءهمز

    كثير فلا صير عليهم إذا قلوا

    Few men, though their singing is plentiful

    So they are many when their number is small

  17. وقد سامهم عز الحياة نفوسهم

    فاعطوه منها ما يعز وما يغلو

    The glory of life ennobled their souls

    So they gave it what ennobles and exalts

  18. وفي الناس قوم كلما ذر شارق

    لهم صبغة يبدونها ولهم شكل

    Among people are those whose brilliance appears

    With a distinctness and form whenever dawn breaks

  19. غرسنا لهم مجداً فعدوا جناية

    لهم غرسنا حتى اجتنوا منه ما يحلو

    We planted glory for them, but they deemed it crime

    We planted for them until they harvested what they craved

  20. فان تك قيس اخطأت بقياسها

    فما ذهلت عما تحاوله ذهل

    If you are a Qays who erred in her measure

    She was not heedless of what she attempted

  21. ولي نفس حر لا تقر ظلامة

    إذا اسرى غيري الظلامة والذل

    I have a free soul that does not accept darkness

    When others fall into darkness and disgrace

  22. وصارم عزم لا يكل غراره

    قراعاً ولا يخشى على حده الفل

    With determined resolve whose deception never weakens

    Striking or fearing no bluntness of blade

  23. وعندي من الأخلاق مالا يذمه

    جليس ولا يخشى بوادره الخل

    I have morals no companion criticizes

    Nor fears their implications

  24. وأكرم اخلاق الفتى البأس والندى

    وألامها جبن النقيبة والبخل

    The finest traits of a youth are valor and generosity

    While their worst are cowardice and stinginess

  25. واسنى العطايا والمواهب كلها

    هو العلم ينميه وينمو به العقل

    The greatest gifts and boons are all

    Knowledge, which grows the intellect

  26. ولا عيب في حلم سوى أن أهله

    يضامون الا أن يحوطهم الجهل

    No flaw in patience, save those who practice it

    Are harmed unless protected by ignorance

  27. أويت إلى ظل الشباب فطاب لي

    به العيش لكن لم يدم ذلك الظل

    I took shelter in the shadow of youth and lived

    Happily, but that shadow did not last

  28. أرى الشعرات البيض رسل منية

    إذا كذبت رسل تعززها رسل

    I see the white hairs, harbingers of death

    When one lie comes, others reinforce it

  29. وقلت لضيف الشيب إذ حل نازلا

    لك البشر عندي والكرامة والنزل

    I said to the guest of gray hair when it descended

    Welcome, you merit honor and hospitality from me

  30. فأنت الذي اتحفتني بنفائس

    هي الحزم والتدبير والحلم والنبل

    For you endowed me with the best:

    Wisdom, discretion, patience and nobility
