اتذكرت باللوى والكثيب
ملعب الريم والغزال الربيب
I remember the sand dunes and the hill,
The playground of gazelles, so lovely and dear,
ام تذكرت بالشقيقة أيام
وصال وعهد حسن وطيب
And days with my beloved, when our love was new,
With joy and innocence, no doubts or fear.
وسرى عاطر النسيم فأهدى
لك طيب الحمى ونشر الحبيب
The scented breeze carried your affection,
Bringing warmth and spreading your love so near,
وليال قصرن أنساً فطالت
بعدها لوعة المحب الكئيب
Nights we treasured, though too brief they seem,
Afterwards yearning ached within the lover drear.
كل ريم ساجي الجفون غزير
ومهاة نشوى اللحاظ لعوب
Each gazelle with sleepy lids that greet the morn,
Each lovely doe with gaze so bright and clear,
كلما افتر ثغرها وضح اللؤلؤ
في سلسل الشتيت الشنيب
When her lips part, pearls gleam in her smile,
Like beads on a chain, white as new snow, appear.
ووشاح يعدي الفؤاد خفوقاً
فهو يلقى خفوقه بوجيب
Her veil stirs the heart, beating fast, in bliss,
Finding its own beats echoing so near.
ما على المانعين نيل لقاها
من وصال العفيف غير المريب
No barriers can keep true lovers apart,
Their chaste affection has nothing to fear.
يستزير الخيال بلغة راض
من مواعيدها بطيف كذوب
Imagination paints in fanciful hues,
Of meetings with her, though they were never here.
وكفى بالتقى حجاباً إذا لم
تغن شيئاً صيانة المحجوب
Honor's veil is enough, no need to hide,
Modesty preserves that held most dear.
قرّب الذكر دارها فالتقينا
ونعيم الهوى وصال القلوب
Thoughts of her home bring us close to meet,
Love's joy unites our hearts without fear.
ليس يخشى على القلوب رقيب
والتلاقي عليه الف رقيب
Hearts need not dread any watchful spy,
Though many stand guard, no reproach is near.
حاز فيه النسيب بهجة حسن
فمن الحسن بهجة في النسيب
The kinsman gained beauty's joy in her,
Joy in beauty is gained when the kinsman is near.
مثلما حازت المدائح فخرا
بمعاني الشهم الهمام النقيب
Praise won glory for excelling verse,
With noble ideas from the honored spear.
شرف القول في مديح أبي
محمود الماجد الشريف الحسيب
It brings honor to sing praise of my father,
Exalted, benevolent, valued and dear,
بالأغر الوضاح والسير الجحجاح
بحر السماح غيث الجدوب
Sea of generosity, rain for the thirsty,
Bright, bold, intrepid, no fatigue does he fear.
في معاليه للقوافي مجال
يتسابقن في الفسيح الرحيب
For poetry he offers open fields,
That race to extol him, so mighty, sincere.
ساد أشرافها بعلم وحلم
ومضاء ونائل موهوب
By knowledge and wisdom he leads nobles,
Gifted, achieving, endowed without peer.
ضارباً بيت سؤدد طاول الأ
نجم ضافي رواقه المضروب
His home outshone stars, a glorious sight,
A mansion of splendor, lofty and sheer.
قابل السؤدد التليد طريف
فتحلى قديمه بالقشيب
Both homes rose high, beyond any claim,
All hopes fall short of his merit so clear.
وكلا السؤددين عال رفيع
قاصر عنه باع كل طلوب
His lineage shines like the glowing sun,
His pristine glory flows on without veer.
نسب تشرق الشموس بنور
مستنير السنا له منسوب
Say to any who envy his status gained,
Close kin may stumble, while distant stay near.
قل لمن رام شأوه بعد النيل
ومنك العثار جد قريب
Others merit honors, not you alone,
Who grasp at them greedily, with guile and fear.
ان للمكرمات غيرك أهلا
حملوا عبئها بغير لغوب
They reached the summit by merit true,
And won the prize by their valor sincere.
ملكوا غاية السباق وفازوا
بمعلى قداحها والرقيب
If you brand deeds as faults, they call them fair,
For ugly labels stick, causing many a tear.
يسمون الفعال ميسم حسن
ان وسمتم افعالكم بعيوب
He has, in success, a cheerful friend,
Whose dignity awes with might austere.
وله في الندى بشر أنيس
دونه عزة الوقور المهيب
From his bounty, pilgrims gain and depart,
Like clouds raining goodness, fertile and dear.
ويحل الوفود منه بربع
كمحياه بالنوال خصيب
His home welcomes guests with kindness unstinting,
As if greeting loved ones, held so sincere.
ويكاد المحل من كرم الأهل
يلاقي الضيوف بالترحيب
Indeed, hope's refuge, when despair looms nigh,
Is like the strange hope that perseveres.
نعم مستوطن الرجاء إذا ما
طوح اليأس بالرجاء الغريب
When called to great deeds, he responds gladly,
Best at answering noble calls full of cheer.
ما دعاه داعي المكارم إلا
كان عند الدعاء خير مجيب
The generous when misers all else decline,
And lamps against darkness, dispelling fear,
المساميح عند بخل الغوادي
والمصابيح في ظلام الخطوب
Are brilliant stars, moons with success always,
Their glory eternal, no setting comes near.
هم شموس العلى نجوم المساعي
مالأقمار سعدهم من غروب
