Glory’s own brother offered in his palm
My brother of glory holds in his palm,
to beauty’s own brother an apple—
and gives to my handsome brother an apple—
white and red; if one afflicted with a cold smelled it,
white, red—that, when smelled,
he would regain his breath and find relief.
revives the soul and gives comfort.
As though it were wine turned solid,
As if it were wine turned solid overnight
with the hollow of the palm for its cup.
in a cup brimming with comfort.
So ask not about a lover drunk with passion,
So do not ask a love-drunk man
whom love’s cupbearer plied with his goblets.
whose cups of love the love-pourer has filled.
