منازل في أرض الطفوف وارسم

على مثلها دمع المحبين يسجم

Dwellings in the land of misfortune I draw

Upon them the tears of lovers flow

فيا ليت شعري هل ترد لزائر

سلاما فيحظى بالجواب السملم

Oh would that I knew, will a visitor come

With greetings, and be answered benignly?

عهدت مغانيها حمى كل خائف

يلوذ بها في النائبات فيسلم

Their songs gave refuge to every fearful soul

Seeking shelter in times of distress, safely.

فهل ذلت الأشراف من آل أحمد

فأصبحت الأنذال فيهم تحكم

Have the noble of Ahmed’s clan now bent

That the lowly among them rule?

لقد ملكتهم عصبة أموية

تسير بهم سير الذين تقدموا

An Umayyad gang has seized them

Marching them like those gone before.

فشملهم أيدي سبقا متفرق

وما ملكوه فهو فيء مقسم

Encompassing them, hands of fate scattered

And what they owned is spoils divided

إلى أي دار بعد دار أبي الوفا

تخب ركاب الوافدين وترسم

To which house after my patron’s house

Do the feet of guests walk and trace?

جعلتهم سهاماً وفره فترقبوا

عواقبها ان السهام لاسهم

They made them into arrows and waited

For their consequences, as arrows have no guide.

فما هي إلا كعبة الجود والندى

ولكنما الحجاج ارفق منكم

Yet it is but the Kaaba of generosity and dew

Though pilgrims, kinder than you.

أفى الحق أن تبني المكارم والعلى

لكم أهلها الغادون وهي تهدم

Is it just that you destroy sublimity and heights

While vulgar remain its people, as it falls?

وكم حملوا ثقل المغارم عنكم

فكيف غدت أموالهم وهي مغنم

How many burdens of sins from you they bore

Yet their wealth you made plunder?

فإن تهدموا دار الضيافة والفرى

فإن بناء الحمد لا يتهدم

If you destroy the house of hospitality and virtue

Then praise’s building cannot be ruined.

تكاد ضلوع المعتفين إذا هى

عماد لها من زفرة تتقوم

The ribs of its patrons, it they sigh

Are pillars shaken by their groan.

ثعالب قد عاثت بغابة ضيغهم

وهل يتقى كيد الثعالب ضيغم

Foxes have wreaked havoc on their thicket

Can the ploy of foxes be avoided?

نهبتم خياماً للحسين هي التي

تذكرنا كيف استبيح المخيم

You have plundered tents of Hussein, which

Remind us how the encampment was ravaged.

جفان كأمثال الجوابي امامها

رواسي قدور حولها الكوم تلحم

Bowls before which nobles bowed

Now surround piles of trash fused.

وكل أثاث من تليد وطارف

يجل عن الأحصاء قدراً ويعظم

And furnishings of splendor and joy

Too grand to tally, so majestic.

ملكتم فلم تبقوا وتلك سجية

اللئام فما تبقي إذا هي تحكم

You ruled but did not remain, such is the way

Of villains, they do not keep if empowered.

فأعمد تهوي وشم قواعد

تميل بها أيدي العدى وتحطم

Pillars collapse and foundations sway

At the hands of enemies that batter.

أمنتجع الوفاد كيف قد انجلت

سحائب عن برق من البشر يبسم

O haven of delegates, how the clouds cleared

From a flash of lightning that made men smile!

لقد كان شمل الوفر فيك مبددا

على ان شمل المجد فيك منظم

Gathering’s abundance in you was scattered

Though glory’s assembly was organized.

وللشعراء المفلقين بجوده

عكاظ به للجود كم راق موسم

For poets spread your generosity

Many a fair season of generosity hosted.

وجوه منيرات وايد سخية

فلمجتدي فيها بحور وانجم

Radiant faces and generous hands

My seas therein and stars!.

فلا نضبت تلك البحور ولا خبت

نجوم تضئ الخطب والخطب مظلم

Those seas never ebbed nor stars dimmed

Lighting speeches, though speeches darkened.

أبا أحمد صبراً على كل حادث

فانك في حرب الحوادث معلم

O Abu Ahmed patience for each misfortune

You are exemplar in the war of misfortunes.

وما أنت الا السيف فل غراره

قليلا ولا عار إذا فل مخذم

You are but the sword - so polish it

Briefly, no shame if it rusts from blood.

وما هي إلا غمرة سوف تنجلي

فيلقى جزاء من اساء ويندم

This is but a cloud soon to clear

And the unjust will meet their recompense and regret.
