جمالك ليس يسمح بالجميل

وقلبي ليس يرضى بالبديل

بقانون المحبة قد قبلنا

وهل يسع المحب سوى القبول

By the law of love we have accepted

And can a lover do anything but accept?

فكيف رفضت لائحة المعنى

بمؤتمر الهوى قبل المثول

So how did you reject the manifesto of meaning

At the conference of passion before appearing

وكان بها صلاح من فساد

وكان بها شفاء من غليل

In it was goodness from corruption

And in it was healing from anguish

بأي سياسة نحظى بوصل

لقد حيرت ارباب العقول

With what politics will we attain union?

You have perplexed the wise

ترد دليل حبي واشتياقي

وتصغي للوشاة بلا دليل

You refuse evidence of my love and longing

And listen to slanderers without evidence

اتسمع قول واش مستبد

وأنت الحر ذو الرأي الأصيل

Do you hear the words of a tyrannical gossip

While you are the free one of original opinion?

ملكت بحسنك الأحرار لكن

جهلت ادارة الملك الجليل

You owned the free with your beauty but

You did not know how to manage the sublime reign

بطلعتك استضاء الشرق نوراً

فصن هذا الطلوع عن الافول

With your rising, the east shone with light

So protect this dawn from fading

اسيل الخد ما طلت دماء

تضرع وجنة الخد الأسيل

My cheeks flow blood however long desired

Pleading while the soft cheek prays

حجت فاعلن الأعداء حرباً

فكائن حول خدرك من قتيل

I performed pilgrimage so the enemies declared war

So there is around your cheeks a slain one

وحول الثغر قد حاموا عطاشى

إلى ورد الزلال السلسبيل

And around the mouth they gathered thirsty

To the soft flowing drink

فجرد دون ثغرك سيف لحظ

رهيف الحد ليس بذي فلول

So unsheathe the sword of your glance

Keen of edge, not one to be blunted

ويا ريماً تعرض لاقتناص

حذارك من اخي قنص خنول

And O doe exposed to hunting

Beware of the cunning hunter

تغزلنا بحسنك فاستبانت

مزاياه وكانت في خمول

We became enamored with your beauty thus appeared

Its virtues while it was in languor

نجاهد في هواك وأنت تحمى

على أهل الهوى نهج السبيل

We struggle in your love while you protect

The people of passion the path of the way

اقام ذووك في جدل ورحنا

ضحايا من صريع أو جريل

Your people disputed while we went

Victims of death or plague

فنحن اصول مفخرك الزواكي

فكيف الفرع يهزأ بالأصول

For we are the noble roots of your pride

So how can the branch ridicule the roots?

عذارك أيها الرشأ المفدى

صحافي الفرع يهزأ بالأصول

Your virtue, O noble one

Journalist of the branch ridiculing the roots

سرى والشمس عال مجتلاها

ظلام العارض الساري العجول

It flowed and the sun rose high

The darkness of that fleeting intruder

تدب نماله من حول ثغر

جنى الشهد معلول الشمول

It crept around the mouth

Picking the fruit though defective in totality

اغرب العارضين حللت شرفا

من الخدين جل عن الحلول

Strangest of intruders you made honorable

The cheeks far above perfection

وكان الخد بالتوحيد أولى

فما معنى مشاركة الحلول

Though the cheek deserved monotheism more

So what is the meaning of partnership in perfection?

يظن اللحظ كل وللمنايا

مكان في شبا اللحظ الكليل

A glance thinks every glance leads to death

While glances are but advances

وما ألحاظه الا نصول

حذار حذار من تلك النصول

Beware, beware of those advances

We sent the breeze to them as messenger

بعثنا بالنسيم لهم رسولا

فخان وما رعى شرف الرسول

But he betrayed and did not keep the honor of messenger

And did not convey the words to them truthfully

وما نقل الحديث لهم صحيحاً

وهل يرجى الصحيح من العليل

And is truth expected from one defective?

So in their eyes good is reconciling the enemy

فحسن عندهم وصل المعادي

وحسن عندهم هجر الخليل

And good in their eyes is abandoning the friend

A university whose efforts included

فجامعة سعي فيها رمتنا

بتفريق العشيرة والقبيل

Dividing the family and tribe

Though secrecy was uncovered to all eyes

وقد برح الخفاء لكل عين

فما يغني اعتذار المستقيل

What good is the apology of one resigned?

You hid in the darkness so the crescent appeared

تستر بالدجى فبدا هلال

فبين موقف الداء الدخيل

Revealing the stance of the foreign affliction

So say to the beloved, the Nile has come flooding

فقل للكنك ان النيل وافى

يسومك خطة العاني الذليل

It will make you forget the plan of the disgraced sufferer

And I will not leave India or Saadi

ولست بتارك هندا وسعدى

على ضغط المراقب والعذول

To the pressure of the monitor and slanderer

With the wings of protection we watered the homeland

باكناف الحمى وطن سقينا

ثراه بعارض الدمع الهطول

Its ground overflowing with pouring tears

We asked about it but it did not allow a response

سألناه فلم يسمح برد

سوى ان قال للعبرات سيلى

Other than saying to tears, “flow”

I entrusted it to the gazelles publicly

عهدت به الظباء العين قدماً

ممنعة الكناس بأسد غيل

Prevented by the lions from access

My jealous ones can barely stand it

غيارى لا يكاد الطيف وهناً

يلم بذلك السرب الخذول

Grasping that cowardly group

And for the hopeful through it, rain of hands

وللراجي به غيث الايادي

وللاجى به حرم النزيل

And for the refugee through it, sanctuary

So it has become its protector violated

فقد اضحى حماه مستباحاً

كأن العز آذن بالرحيل

As if honor signaled departure
