    Clothed in the hems of withered spears

    من حسنها شمس الضحى في خجل

    The morning sun shy of its beauty

    Of its beauty, the morning sun shy

  4. يا من رأى شمسا على غصن نقا

    يميله سكر الصبا في الحلل

    O you who saw a sun on a thin branch

    Swaying with the intoxication of the morning breeze in the meadows

  5. ظبية خدر مالها من قانص

    شمس جمال مالها من مجتلى

    A doe intoxicated, with no enemy

    A sun of beauty, with no admirer

  6. قلبي صريع طرفها وكم رمت

    فاقصدت مقلتها من مقتلي

    My heart a captive of her glance, and how often she shot

    And her eyelashes precisely struck my demise

  7. فمصرع العشاق من قوامها

    وطرفها بين القنا والاسل

    For the death of the lovers is from her figure

    And her glance between coyness and disdain

  8. ارى السيوف بالدروع تتقي

    الا سيوفا تنتضى من مقل

    I see the swords with the shields taking heed

    Except swords unsheathed from scabbards

  9. اصبح قلبي غرضا ترشقه

    بالنبل ربات العيون النجل

    My heart has become a target, shot

    By the arrows of the possessors of languid eyes

  10. ما هي الا لحظة واحدة

    تجمع ما بين المنى والاجل

    It is but a single moment

    That brings together what is between purpose and fate

  11. فتك الضبا حين تسل وضبا

    اجفانها قواتل في الخلل

    The killing of gazelles when they frolic and the fluttering

    Of their lashes, killers in the thickets

  12. تبسم عن مفلج رقت به

    سلافة الراح وصفو العسل

    She smiles from a paralyzing dimple that softened with

    The gentleness of the wind and the purity of honey

  13. ما لطعين عاسل من قدها

    برء سوى رضابها المعسل

    No reproacher blames the tall one for her statue

    Except the one satisfied with her touch

  14. ما لذي لي غير الرضاب منهل

    واظمأ القلب لذاك المنهل

    None console me but her touch a spring

    And my heart thirsts for that spring

  15. ما ضرها لو سمحت برشفة

    من ريقة فيها شفاء العلل

    It would not harm her to allow a sip

    From saliva in which lies the cure for illnesses

  16. يا زمن الوصل على كاظمة

    اعائد أنت بذاك العيش لي

    O time of connection, return to the silent one

    I return, you to that life for me

  17. إذ موردي عذب وروض بهجتي

    غض وحبل الوصل لم ينفصل

    For my meadow is fresh and my garden of delight flourishing

    The rope of connection not yet severed

  18. أيام أنس قد بلغت وطري

    فيها وأدركت قصارى أملي

    Days of intimacy have come and reached their peak

    In them, I attained the farthest hopes

  19. بكل نشوى اللحظ من سكر الصبا

    تسعى بكاسات الرحيق السلسل

    With all the intoxication of the moment from the nectar of the morning breeze

    Bearing cups of chained wine

  20. هيفاء مقلاق الوشاح ان مشت

    لكنها صامتة المخلخل

    Delicate Haya, her scarf fluttering, though

    She is silent, unadorned

  21. أين الشقيق الغض من وجنتها

    والغصن من قوامها المعتدل

    Where is the rosy down from her cheek

    And the branch from her shapely figure

  22. قد عطلت من الحلي جيدها

    غانية بالحسن عن كل الحلى

    She has removed her jewellery from her neck

    Singing with beauty beyond all adornment

  23. اصبحت اهوى عذلي لذكرها

    لذكرها اصبحت اهوى عذلي

    I have come to love her coyness from remembering her

    From remembering her I have come to love her coyness

  24. رقيقة الخدين قاس قلبها

    خفيفة الخصر رداح الكفل

    Gentle of cheek, hard of heart

    Slender of waist, smooth of ankle

  25. كم بخلت بوصلها عن عاشق

    لو سألته نفسه لم يبخل

    How she was stingy denying union to a lover

    If he asked for himself, he would not be stingy

  26. وشادن يعطو بجيد اتلع

    وناظر بسحره مكتحل

    With a neck finer than a blade’s edge

    And a glance kohled

  27. ظبي إلى الفرس انتمى جماله

    فكيف اضحى طرفه من ثعل

    A gazelle whose beauty resembles the steed’s

    So how did its glance come to squint?

  28. ليت الذي اعل جسمي طرفه

    كان بوعد وصله معلل

    Would that what exalted my body were its glance

    Fulfilling the promise of union

    Through the cracks of the barrier

  33. لا تطلبوا لي عن هواهم بدلا

    فلست أرضى بعدهم بالبدل

    Do not ask me for a substitute for their love

    I will not be content after them with a substitute

  34. من بعدهم حال سواد مفرقي

    شيبا ولكن حبهم لم يحل

    After them my state is one of dispersed greyness

    Ageing, but their love does not fade

    بجائر في حكمه لم يعدل

    Oh heart, you have not been just with an oppressor

    Unjust in his ruling, not equitable
