By your life, this is no life one could wish for—
a pleasant one—nor a swift death that brings release.
By my life, al-Karawwas came, choking back his grief
over a grievous affair, when its horror became known.
Jacob announced the death of a family among them; desolate now lay
their dwellings, from Rūmah to al-Baqīʿ.
Each of them was life-giving rain whenever drought afflicted humankind,
and Jacob, among them, was springtime for all creation.
