أحلْتَ عما عهدت من أدبِك

أم لكَ مُلكاً فتهتَ في كتبكْ

You have abandoned the manners that you once upheld

Have you now become arrogant in your books?

أم هل ترى أنّ في مناصفة إلا

خوان نقصا عليك في حسبكْ

Or do you think that to share equally is nothing but

A flaw upon you and your lineage?

أم كان ما كان منك عن غضب

فأيّ شيء أدناك من غضبكْ

Or was it out of anger that you acted this way

What has brought you now out of your rage?

إن جفاء كتاب ذي ثقة

يكون في صدره وأمتع بكْ

If an esteemed friend shuns correspondence

His heart still cherishes you and holds you dear

كيف بانصافنا لديك وقد

شاركت آل النبي في نسبكْ

How could we reconcile when you have

Associated with the Prophet's family and kin?

قل للوفاء الذي تقدِّره

نفسك عندي مللتُ من طلبكْ

Tell your loyalty that you so highly regard

I have grown weary of pursuing it

أتعبت كفيك في مكاتبتي

حسبك ما قد لقيتَ من تعبكْ

You have exhausted your hands corresponding with me

You have suffered enough from your toil
